The new Average speed cameras on the A40 /westway West Lond

Can the new average speed cameras also work as stand alone cameras though? Perhaps they do both.
No, I am sure the new average speed cameras only do average speed, not spot speed. It shouldn't matter therefore what speed you pass each camera. If you did 80mph past every camera, you shouldn't be prosecuted for speeding so long, that is, that you stop for a while in between each pair of cameras! :-)

Observant A40 users may have noticed the new "local Variable Message Signs" appearing along the route. This suggests that Transport for London are going to provide information on these signs "in the weeks leading up to the system going live". It's still looking like the system is not live now and will go live around mid Sept.
All the static cameras have now been removed and 'average speed camera' signs have just gone up, so looks like it'll be live any day now. Also worth noting that the system extends into the North Circular at Hanger Lane and all the way round that to Bounds Green.
So a big thanks and well done to Uber employees, chavs and the self important debt monkeys in the usual German cars.

Uh seriously??The four locations TfL will be trialling average speed cameras along the TfL Road Network are:
A2 (between Black Prince and the Blackwall Tunnel)
A40 (between the Polish War Memorial and Paddington slip road)
A316 (between the M3 and Hogarth Roundabout)
A406 North Circular Road (between Hanger Lane and Bounds Green Road)

In addition it looks like the Central reservation statics that remain will be replaced by a new camera that controls both directions.

Not to forget Addison Lee.The uncomfortable reality is that at times of heavy traffic these cameras will regulate the spastics who trigger the majority of the flow breakdowns with their selfish and incompetant driving, or maybe they will still join from junctions by slamming in and causing chaos, block the outer lane, weave in and out causing emergency braking and it will be no different at peak hours because I don't actually recall the traffic exceeding 50mph during those times.
I guess it will mainly clobber progress at quieter times but then that is when you normally see Baz and Raz sitting low in their old BMWs or shiny A3s doing 100+ from Ruislip trying to get to Westfield so they can spend the evening gibbering some rudimentary form of vocal communication at thick bints who are only ever 9 months away from getting a free house and a hefty raise.
The pace at which those jubs scream in it is not hard to imagine that when they do have an accident it is pretty disasterous for the poor sods caught up in it.

Urban dual carriageways in that London have been race tracks for decades, even more so in years gone by, Norf Circular in particular.
Very true. But I suspect that as car ownership has become massively cheaper over these decades then the average IQ and ability of the chaps doing the racing has arguably plummeted. DonkeyApple said:

I've seen a few of these and they are terrifying, but the big hour-long hold-ups do seem to be clapped-out old white van catches fire, Doris' Nissan breaks down, or motorbike meets maker. Also: rubbernecking so two jams for the price of one incident.DonkeyApple said:

Totally agree, and because of TC/EBD/ASR/ABS/Airbags/Pretensioners/SIPS/who-knows-what-else, they've not managed to remove themselves from the gene pool on a quiet country road in the drizzle yet, either. Not that these are bad things, of course, but it was one barrier to driving that's been lowered over the years. It can be easy to assume collisions are caused by dangerous speeding drivers, especially as the authorities and media feed this misconception. Of course some collisions do appear to be as we assume, such as this one collision on the A40 that had these factors:
Exceeding speed limit
Loss of control
Careless, reckless or in a hurry
Aggressive driving
These are the sort of factors that make news, but the vast majority (over 92%) of fatal and serious collisions occur when no-one is speeding. Take this collision on the A40 that had these factors:
Loss of control
Slippery road (due to weather)
Rain, sleet, snow, or fog
Not speeding, not drunk, not on the phone, so probably not news worthy.

This sentiment isn't getting the recognition it deserves.CarsAreBad2572 said:

Why, just WHY???!!!
Good question. Why? Why can't people just obey the speed limit?1) Prosecute millions upon millions of people (to try to get people to do as they're told)
2) Change the laws (so that they are outside the natural behaviour of responsible people)
3) Accept that we live in a lawless society
But there is a more important question, What effect are laws and their enforcement having? It is in answering this that, as an engineer, I am more interested in. The best way to achieve this is to run scientific trials: http://speedcamerareport.co.uk/02_scientific_trial...
when driving Westbound from Paddington on the A40 on Sunday 20 Sept, saw lots of "Average Speed Camera" warning signs but could not see any cameras
coming Eastbound on the way home, lots of signs but could also see cameras.
any one know whether the system is live Eastbound?
What about Westbound, where are the cameras?

Transport for London have stated: "There will be information regarding the expected enforcement of the Average Speed System provided to motorists by the local Variable Message Signs in the weeks leading up to the system going live".There has not been any mention on the "local Variable Message Signs" yet, so we should still be weeks away. This suggests perhaps mid October?
