We want more Trafpols, but especially like those who are sufficiently enlightened to visit and post here and who recognise that many people care about their driving.

But remember there will be some robotic traffic police too that will dish out FPN's irrespective of how safely you were driving over the limit and how well you do in the attitude test!

I still prefer each of the above to furtive, results-driven talivans though!

So long as you don't act like a machine, I'll be happy.

Like I said the other day....It was a 40mph zone and I was only stopping those at 50mph....

Those 45-49 got a stern look and the four finger salute...

Street

The four finger salute is where I hold four finger up on my left hand, thus indicating 40mph. They all seemed to understand and they winced past me

Are you saying that 20 mph limits are not enforced? Or are you joking?

In other words, doing what they're supposed to and INCREASING road safety. Not saying that obvious speeders aren't a danger, but that flesh-and-blood coppers, when free of political orders, can a lot better decide what is actually dangerous than can an inanimate box, and, more importantly, can "prioritise" (e.g. laden, old, smoky Transit tailgating at 75mph, vs modern rep-mobile at 90mph leaving large gaps)

That sounds dangerously close to machine-like behaviour. Failing to distinguish between lane, type of vehicle, manner of driving, condition of vehicle, proximity to other traffic and so on - these are characteristics of machines.

You shouldn't be working to a "rule" - you should use your own skilled judgement in every single case.

Yeah, I know. They have to be 'self-enforcing' so that it is not possible to exceed 20mph whilst driving in a reasonable manner. I suppose "without due care..." could be used though.

Safespeed...

Have a read at some of the posts in the last 10 mins about people who used to get stopped regularly by the police when there were loads of Trafpol..

Now there are loads of cameras and with GPS and radar detectors...their licences are clean....

Sure. I know all about this one.

I was talking with a bunch of seriously mad bikers. They thought speed cameras were just great because they could ride as nutty as they wanted between them.

The bottom line is that the group of folk nicked by speed cameras is NOT the group who use speed dangerously - it's pretty random.

Now Trafpol, by complete contrast, have a statistically proven nose for trouble. You just have to remember to use your instincts and your experience all the time.

The kind of attitude that makes plenty of Trafpol give little if no discretion to speeding bikers.

What?

Camera debate aside...Why isn't it the group that speed dangerously?

Could it be that whenever I've done people for speeding, that is the first time they've ever done it?

It's a bit like the no seat belt merchant. "I normally always wear it"...

Either I'm the luckiest police officer in the world to catch everybody the first time they commit an offence, or each of them is the unluckiest as the first time they do something wrong they get caught..

That's all very well...but scrotes and such like don't cause that many crashes. They drive about like Miss Daisy because they don't want to draw attention. Of course, there are exceptions....

Where the vast majority of KSI collisions involve 'decent' people in 'decent' cars.....

That's spot on Paul.
A good traffic officer has a mind that can discriminate between a first class driver who is merely committing a technical infringement, and a seriously dangerous driver who has to be stopped for the most important of reasons; road safety.
Any piece of technical equipment, regardless of it's purpose has no thinking ability whatever.

Are you serious?

Are you honestly telling us that you cannot follow a car and form an opinion about whether it is being driven in a manner in adherance to the principles of Roadcraft? (For the time being let us ignore whether it is exceeding the speed limit)
