I picked up a new car today and there was no tax disc, now I was a bit sceptical but I knew the changes were coming so OK all is good, after a quick google I spotted this thread, so it seems legit.
But its not October so whats going on?
A brand new car? The tax disc will be in the post to you within 2 weeks. They changed it a while back so that dealers don't get tax discs, instead they apply for the tax on your behalf and it is posted directly to you.But its not October so whats going on?

Up until October you still need to display a tax disc, otherwise you commit the offence of "Failing to display".But its not October so whats going on?
The rules that still apply until 1st October can be found here: http://www.emcgroup.co.uk/dvla-tax-disc-change-for...
Basically, once the dealership has registered the car with the DVLA, you can drive it for up to 14 days without displaying a tax disc (during this time, a tax disc should be dispatched to either the dealership or your home).

Oh bugger mine expires on the 1/7/14 so I guess I'll need to get a small one to cover me until October. I'm personally glad that they are going because I could never rip those f'ing circular bits of st in the right shape anyway.
Mine expires on the 1/9/14, so I'll have to get a disc to display for at least 1 month! (TBH, I may just leave it's last ever tax disc in the window to mark the end of a chapter in the cars life! )As for tearing the disc out, having nearly torn a disc in half once, I always use nail scissors to cut them out.

You can get a full year's worth, it's only needing the paper disc that is changing, existing tax will remain valid.Flibble said:

Another cock up by a government department. They just don't think things through.
MID is not foolproof or immediate. It can take up to 7 days for an insurance company to submit blah blah blah
have you tax a car recentlyMID is not foolproof or immediate. It can take up to 7 days for an insurance company to submit blah blah blah
the insurance requirement has already been removed
They let you buy the tax without insurance evidence, and then check 7 days later and can find none so fine you for having a taxed uninsured vehicle.
Win. Win.
DVLA website says you must have insurance but issues discs without checking insurance is in place!! As you say a good moneyspinner.
Just a thought. Maybe they realise the MID is not foolproof so don't bother checking.
Caution, the law has changed regarding insurance as you now MUST have continuous insurance in place. So DVLA can easily check every car that is not SORNed and send a warning/penalty fine.
This thread was actually about no longer having to display a tax disc and the general public potentially report untaxed cars ... hence I bet it will cause confusion...

No, you'll have to get an annual one to cover you until July 15. But you can take it out of your window on 1 oct.No paper disc from 1st will be issued.
If you have a disc, you don't have to display after 1st October.
Police can check Insurance/MOT/Road Tax electronically
I'll bet there will be numptys who think they don't need road tax anymore, and of course they will be receiving fines in the post ..

Regards the new RK having to "tax the vehicle immediately" - just because it's on a dot gov webpage doesn't mean it's true (or a legal requirement). I seem to recall that the 'proposals' for this comedy scheme included 14 days' grace for the new keeper to purchase back-dated tax?
I'm not going to try to find this bit of the legislation to check if there will be 14 days' grace, I have better things to do (like posting this rubbish ).
If taxation is required immediately upon purchase (with no 14 days' grace), then surely it will be cancelled as soon as the RK is changed (as SORN is )??? Now that would be an oversight of Titanic proportions!!!

I nearly bought a tax disc holder for my bike on the weekend before some kindly gent waiting to pay for his stuff pointed this out to me. Saved me a tenner. Wondered why they were on discount.
Jesus wept. What kind of tax disc holder is discounted to a tenner...? I'd want the disc included...Gassing Station | Speed, Plod & the Law | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
