Hard to comment when we don't really know if the legal limit, or twice the legal limit, impairs more than the natural ability of some alcohol free drivers.
Drunk driving is dangerous, but I've never heard any hard facts to justify the merit of the legal limit, which is clearly not drunk driving.
Before the hysteria became widespread, we must have been way over today's limit on our regular rural pub crawls in the 60s.

Are you indoctrinated?
I can't see how you wouldn't realise after drinking orange and vodka that there was vodka in it.
Seems bizarre but JPs are funny at the best of times and known them treat differently for same the same crime. Clearly they bought this women's story and thought she was beyond blame. Not sure how !,,,

That is ridiculous. The story is clearly a made up loads of b0ll0cks anyway.
I think you'd realise if you were drinking a glass of OJ with 4 shots of vodka in it.
Not really. We used to be able to get up to 6-8-shots of vodka into a pint of J20. At a pound a shot, and two pounds for a J20 it was a very cost effective way to get hammered very quickly. I think you'd realise if you were drinking a glass of OJ with 4 shots of vodka in it.
My youth was all about cost efficiency, and was fairly mixed.

So, anything you can give me to clear this up?

Well, it's a ballsy and inventive defence. Clearly bks to the casual observer however enough to introduce reasonable doubt...
It.wasn't a defence - it was an argumen that there were special reasons not to impose the (otherwise mandatory ) driving ban in spite of her guilt. Which means that reasonable doubt doesn't come into it - the onus is on te defence to prove (on the balance f probabilities) that special reasons exist. In other words the magistrates must have thought it more likely than not that she was telling the truth when she said she didn't know that the. Orange juice contained alcohol, and that she'd have been under the limit but for the orange juice.Whether they were right to think that I have no idea but it's worth keeping in mind that (1) they're ordinary people, no more likely to fall for an obvious sob story that, well, any other ordinary person on the street and (2) they heard all the evidence, not just the bits the Daily Wail chose to report.

No, I learned a long time ago that I feel better without alcohol. It was different in the 60s. I'm not trying to be controversial, I'd just like to know how the limit was determined, whether it's valid or whether it was a number plucked from the air. It's my experience of the 60s that makes me think it might not be valid, along with conversations I've had with medical bods.
So, anything you can give me to clear this up?
Yea,lots of people drive better after a few drinks! So, anything you can give me to clear this up?

I completely agree, I am in Scotland where they have saw the need to reduce the limit even further, based on very little publicised evidence. With the Scottish limit a half pint is enough to put most people over, to try and argue that a half pint of lager is enough to adversely effect your driving enough for a 12month ban is an absolute joke. Drunk driving is dangerous, but I've never heard any hard facts to justify the merit of the legal limit, which is clearly not drunk driving.

Imo we either need a more realistic limit, similar to that in Australia or the US (where you can consume 1-2 pints and still be legal) or a tiered system where slight deviations are met with minor 3 point FPNs saving the rather extreme punishments for those who are posing an actual danger (2 to 3 times the current English limit where inebriation is obvious).
As you say it is complete hysteria. Hell in my opinion most UK laws in relation to road traffic are in need of liberalisation, livelihoods being ruined over openly worded "Internet device" laws, automated enforcement of speed in areas with very little safety related evidence and the constant money gouging of those seeking to drive non conventional vehicles (with the '98 restrictions, the constant changes to towing legislation and recently the ridiculous 3DLD motorcycle st). It's all a total joke.

Just to be clear, I don't condone or advocate DD, I abhor it. I just think the mock horror from people who talk about others being twice over the limit is quite hysterical. I could be 3-4 times over the DD limit and people around me wouldn't even know I was drunk. Everyone is different of course.

I suspect the truth is closer to: she got absolutely mashed the night before, was still over the limit in the morning, drove and crashed.
