The approval covers the measurement of vehicle speeds up to 155 mph.
So, if you drove past a camera at 180mph, would you escape a fine and ban ?
Hmmm...lets see - the GATSO takes two photos. In one, there's a car. In the other, there's just this cloud of dust raised by it's passing.
That might just count as evidence of a silly speed!!!
But wouldn't there be a speed too fast for the camera to get a clear picture in the first place? I mean, tere must be some limitations on shutter speed...
In daylight with a GOOD lens, you can expect a minimum shutter speed of 1/1000th of a second.
Lets say 178mph...288km/h. =4.8km/minute =80m/s
In 1/1000th of a second, the car will have travelled 80/1000 = 8cm.
I suppose you COULD get a blur from that, but as the movement would be all in the direction of the lens, blurring would be minimal (if it was tangential, you'd just see a blur!)...so you'd still be able to read the plate. If the 2 photo's are 1/10s apart, that will give an 8m distance travelled...not enough to get out of shot.
Any photography experts know any better on GATSO shutter speeds and time between photos???
