Depends whether they had a UK licence or a German licence perhaps.

Doesn't matter what licence they have. If they are banned in Germany they are banned in Germany.
It's only outside Germany they will be legally able to drive if it's a non German licence.

Blimey, you might be better off setting up a Direct Debit!

Joking aside, the size of the fines could have been a LOT worse, so best to shrug your shoulders and pay them (which, to be fair, you are doing).

I've just received a €280 speeding fine from Austria. I may be wrong but it looks like 60 kph on a 50 kph B road. Worrying if right but guess it must have been a higher speed

It says you were nicked outside a built up area, for exceeding the 60kmh limit by 50kmh. Naughty boy!

Makes a more sense then. Can't pinpoint where it was but 60 kph limit on the B108, outside a built up area ... maybe a nice tunnel. No photo provided.
