85mph in 70 :(

In my opinion, anyone getting getting three points for less than 90 mph should really have a hard word with the police officer *commanding* the beat officer on the spot.
I wrote out a stinking letter to our local Chief Con when I got zapped in very dubious circumstance. However a friend in a neighbouring force advised against sending it unless I didn't mind getting a *lot* of attention in the future.

We all know the risks when we do these speeds
Very little risk, in my view.
Only a couple of hundred folks killed per year in the UK on motorways.
You are actually more at risk on the hard shoulder than in the fast lane.
Remember: even though the UK limit is 70 mph, over half the traffic is travelling faster than that, and about 20 per cent are doing over 80 mph.
It's a widely ignored limit.

Haven't the police force got anything better to do ?
This really is a poor allocation of resources.
I think he meant the risk of being caught, not of the speed itself. Remember all Germans should be dead as they use the autobahns at 155mph (not)
I can't help feeling there's something in this...
Many of us exceed the posted speed limit in situations where we claim it is safe to do so. Many of us berate those who speed inappropriately (even those who are going too fast, but below the posted speed limit, but that's a different matter).
If the trappers were made to be visible more than the statutory 20yrds (or whatever it is), and limited to trapping within half the distance that they are visible for, I feel that I would only get caught when I was being dangerous through use of speed. This seems fair to me. And that would seem to mirror the intent of the lawmakers in writing the RTA.

I think he means risk in terms of risk of getting nicked not safety risk.
When you get done for doing 89 - please have a go at the commanding officer and report back your findings.

Just so angry with myself, i mean .. I saw the camera van, thought 'better remember that on the way back' and pegged my speed up the carrigeway incase there was one the other end.
Obviously more pegging needed
I think the point is you obviously felt happy and relaxed with the speed you were doing and concentrating on yer driving to not have to worry about an obstruction such as a scam hidden away somewhere, sounds like another money grabbing opp for the scamcop overtimers.

Safe motoring you guys
Playing devil's advocate here, but surely driving safely and driving slowly aren't the same thing ?
Exactly, I'd say that most of the near accidents I've had have been caused by people below the limit who have no idea of what they're doing or what's around them, ok I see the odd nutter speeding but many more braindeaders who are accidents waiting to happen.
