If you imagine a junction with a variable Stop sign that turns into a Giveway sign, and treat it like that you can't go far wrong.

I learned to drive in London too. I was taught that when the amber came up after the red that was the time to put the car in gear, ease the clutch out to the biting point and release the handbrake ratchet, holding the car on the handbrake and clutch. then, when the green came up it was just a case of releasing the handbrake as the clutch was brought into full engagement and the accelerator pressed. Nice easy departure from the lights, looking out for "amber gamblers" shooting across in front though 
Waiting for the green to light up and then doing all the above would often result in honking from behind but here in New Zealand the lights go straight from red to green so most people sit with the car in gear and riding the clutch or, as most drive automatics, with the footbrake on. Dazzling at night and in the wet
Do people really get beeped at for not going on amber? I don't drive in London a great deal but have done a few trips recently and have never noticed.

The dash cam compilations often have idiots raging over minor mistakes that are easily anticipated and avoided through minor speed adjustments. However they are instead blasting their horns and uploading them despite the dash cammer looking like a complete cock womble.That chap filmed that, played it back, and decided that the other guy was at fault.
