Travellers, what do they do in other coutries?

I think gone and apache have a point though.
Don't buy anything from Travellers.
Don't sell anything to Travellers.
Don't employ Travellers to do any work.
If you do they have a reason to stay in your area. If they don't they will either move on or have to set up a normal business with local premises...and behave like everyone else.
Its exactly the same as buying a car stereo down the pub. Don't. You've just given someone a reason to take car stereos.

Going back to the original question, didn't Hitler do his best to eradicate the gypsies when he was in power ? Has that had a knock-on effect that has lasted to this day ?
On a couple of visits to Greece I've seen a fair number of "Albanians" selling cheap plastic furniture from old lorries equipped with loudspeakers. But I don't remember seeing similar people elsewhere.
Whilst I appreciate what gone is saying about them being treated with the same respect as any other minority group, I don't think that is the whole point. Not far from where I work is an official "travellers" site. One day a police helicopter could be seen hovering above the site, so, it being lunchtime and a couple of us needed to get our sarnies, we drove round past the site to see what was going on (I know, rubbernecking....). The helicopter was in the hover at about 500 feet and just around the corner from the site were two vanloads of BiB getting kitted out in full riot gear.
Subsequent enquiries with a wpc who happens to be married to a mate, got the full story. A car had been stolen and was being pursued by traffic who called for backup from the force helicopter. The stolen car had driven into the site and traffic had decided not to follow and stopped outside. The helicopter observer had seen the driver get out of the car and go into one of the caravans. He had then kept station above and observed to ensure he didn't come out of the caravan while at least 20 BiB got kitted up ready to go onto the site to arrest him.
Be aware of their beliefs by all means but had the same happened in one of the more dodgy council estates traffic would have simply gone in and arrested him. It wouldn't have needed two vanloads in full riot gear FFS!
Incidentally, why are they travellers when their one aim in life seems to be to not travel but park up and claim somebody elses land as their own? Those that do live on the official sites (that are paid for out of our council taxes) never go anywhere, they just stay there so there isn't the space for any more that turn up.

Well, burn me if you like. But it seems to me that law abiding to miners on strike some yrs ago trying to save their jobs were faced with overwellming odds from the Police/military? MI5 et al!

I don't think they are a minority group. It's possible to put *everyone* into a minority group if you try hard enough.
Nor do I think that being in a minority should get you special treatment. The guidelines published recently were on about Police showing respect to Moslem women by not crashing into their space when they might not be appropriately dressed ; why doesn't this apply to everyone else, or no-one at all ?

My point, which got a bit lost as I was bashing the keyboard, was that, minority group or not, we are expected to consider their customs and values. Is it too much to ask that in return they do the same and respect our customs and values? If they had any sort of respect for the BiB who are trying to go about there normal business, then situations wouldn't occur where it takes two van loads of coppers and a helicopter to arrest one little scrote.
On that same site, the occupants regularly light fires that get out of control (as happens when you start burning old tyres and reels of cable you have just nicked so you can burn the insulation off and flog the copper). The Fire Brigade won't even go on the site without police escort as the kids have a habit of firing ball bearings at them and their vehicles with catapults and nicking as much of their equipment as they can get away with.
