Barefoot or socks offer the best feel and control.
But I've heard 'but what if you get a stone between your foot and the brakepedal'?
I replied I don't drive with gravel in the car and any stones are lifted out.
See someone in flip-flops? They've probably used them to put back on for walking around outside again. Easy to on off.

As someone with big wide feet have had cars where was best to drive barefoot or only in the narrowest of shoes. Was certainly more dangerous to wear normal trainers than barefoot, as I found out by accidentally pushing down both clutch and brake pedal to the floor when changing gear on a motorway. Sole caught brake pedal and suddenly the car was slowing quickly. That was scary, more so for poor car behind me!
I'd say that one thing to consider is if decide to go barefoot to make sure shoes/flipflops aren't in the driver's footwell, don't want those getting stuck under a pedal.
Preference definitely a thin soled shoe but life isn't always that convenient.
