I'm reliably informed by a friend in aviation that both planes and helicopter avilable to North wales Police are used for speed trapping if they have fuel available following a call out.

The police helicopter is so often over that estate at night you can navigate by it!

The Merseyside heli is known as "The Kirkby star" for the same reason

I hope I speak for the majority here when I say: you ing dimwit. imagine the possibilities for disaster if you'd unsighted the pilot? moron!

edit: actually on reflection I suspect you did nothing of the sort and are merely posturing in an attempt to improve your surely mediocre standing on this forum

is hovering close to the House again, (most Nights) FFS!, I thought it was illegal to make excessive noise after 23.30, are the Police above the Law then a I have to get up for work at 05.00 Tomorrow Morning FFS!

looks like I wont be going after all thanks to the Police

The Rules of the Air apply just as much to the Police as to everyone else;

www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si1996/Uksi_19961393_en_2.htm#(firstii)5lowflying

The CAA take low flying very seriously. You can report incidents to the CAA Investigations Branch on 020 7832 5854. You should know that they do not accept complaints from individual households, so you may need to get your neighbours to complain also.

(BTW, you can also complain about low flying military aircraft to the MOD Secretariat on 020 7218 6020, although the standard response is "We have no aircraft operating in that area", even though Easyjet do not customarily operate Jaguars & Chinooks.)

Why do I get so pissed off about this? Well, partly because the Police should obey the law, the same as everyone else, partly because I regard Police helicopters as a waste of money (£1300/hr to operate) and partly because motorists are getting shat on with pollution, noise & other restrictions, while aviators clatter round spoiling everyone's peace and quiet, running on leaded fuel and get away with it.

I'm told they use the white squares which are some known distance apart.

I doubt that would’ve made much difference – unless the pilot was well under ‘dead man’s curve’, besides I’m sure he could have swapped to an IR camera if need be.

That makes sense
I assume they’ll stay on an offender’s tail until trafpol catches and deals. Seems a bit OTT until you consider the apple eating incident

So are helicopter pilots/co pilots trained to form prior opinion of vehicle speeds at such heights, from a moving platform?

It's certainly a daft thing to admit to doing, especially if he really did do it - anyone else for:

attempting to obstruct a police officer in his line of duty

?

i think police helicopters are almost a total waste of time. if the buggers got out the office & walked the beat they might catch someone, playing about in an expensive toy with a fan on the roof wont help.
my local police 'copter does do something useful, its got a bed in the back & a paramedic.

I live in Usk, Monmouthshire about 200 yards from the Prison. This is the jail that the 2 Kiddy fiddlers, that escaped last weekend were originally housed in prior to their transfer 3 miles down the road in Prescoed open prison. They were seen and caught by BIB using helicopter and I for one am extremely greatful

You complete and utter F**ING MORON I fly helicopters for a living (Search and Rescue not Police) and W**kers shining these torches at us is seriously dangerous. If it happens to catch our eyes then that is our night vision buggered for a period of time: if we are trying to do anything other than fly straight and level it can seriously jeopardise the safety of the aircraft and its crew. Whilst you, with your small twisted mind, might find this funny I'm sure you would find it less so if the aircraft subsequently crashed, probably into a built up area if it was over a town - do you really want the deaths of people on your conscience (if you have one) just because something is anoying you?

If you have a problem with the actions of the aircraft take it up with the Chief Constable don't try and kill people - and, by the way, if you are seen shining your light at the aircraft you can and will be prosecuted. We note locations of the w**nkers that do this and, believe me, we take it very, very seriously.

Edited to correct angry typing mistakes.

Matchless you are a complete and utter tt (no offence).

Every so often a helicopter fly's around my area and yes they are a little annoying but deal if it means the police can do there job more effectively then I'm willing to put up with it. I love the way people moan on this forum about crime then moan about an extremely useful tool for law enforcement...
