Highest speed recorded on our road is over 70mph. During the daytime. Speed limit is 40mph. No pavement. Houses along the road - rural village. Primary school at the end of the road. Pretty sure no one needed a speed gun to decide they didn’t fancy that coming towards them whilst walking down the road.

Mock Speedwatch all you like, but it’s low cost, isn’t a revenue raising exercise (unless people are replying to the warning letters they get sent by CSW and enclosing cash for some reason), and it helps make people think about their driving.
It’s pointless. Put a camera van out there if you want results, or campaign for a camera.

Or just continue sitting outside tutting. You’re all hypocrites anyway smile
Agree on the hypocrites bit - the worst driving is usually by locals who "know the road" (ie know where it goes which enables them to see through walls and stop twice as fast as a scum non-local".

….. I've certainly got better things to do with my life but 25 years ago I had to identify the body of my wife of just three years, killed in a road accident. I wouldn't wish that experience on anyone, seeing the lifeless mangled body of the person I loved lying on a cold slab. It that's making your life difficult, then I really don't give a toss!
Very sorry to read that, your stance on motoring safety is a little more understandable.

And there it is. Only a couple of posts up I made the point that some of the detractors don’t understand the process of changing speed limits etc.

Essex police put a PCSO with Trucam with CSW in areas they detect a lot of speeding. Seems to be retry effective.

Here's the nub, I genuinely don't think anybody who has such blatant disregard for the most basic driving laws to drive at those headline speeds will change their driving behaviour because of a CSW campaign. They don't care about posted speed limits, they don't care about pedestrians walking along the side of the road, they don't care what would happen if a child ran out, they have little regard for the Police and they certainly don't care about a group of locals in Hi-Viz waving a speed camera at them. If they did care, they wouldn't be driving at those speeds through your village in the first place!

Yes, those habitual 35 in a 30 drivers may temper their speed out of shame or embarrassment once pinged by the CSW but those aren't the ones we should be concerned about.

Don’t speed and you’re all good. Obviously sometimes the limit isn’t clear but apart from that no excuses really.

Just like ex-smokers, these bored and slightly annoyed individuals decide to wage war on speeding cars, they probably did the very same thing themselves a few years back.
Who are careful not to record the speeds of their friends and neighbours

The 35 in a 30 group won't be affected - CSW don't record speeds under 38 (or at least, not in Essex).

If it's this group, https://saferessexroads.org/serp-volunteers-to-hel... , then anyone pinged speeding by them could well end up with 3 points and a fine.

Just popped onto the website.

https://www.communityspeedwatch.org/FRONT-Leagueta...

Looks like a fun little social experiment.

community speedwatch said:
Training to become an approved CSW Operator starts already during the registration process. Before a new volunteer's details are passed on to either the Police or the coordinator of the group they apply to join, every new operator must first take the compulsory eLearning course and pass a multiple choice Quiz at the end.

The course consists of five 3-5 minutes long videos explaining rules governing Health & Safety, Code of Conduct and Roadside Procedures. The course can be finished in approximately 30 minutes and retaken as many times as are needed. Afterwards, the successful applicants are issued with a Certificate downloadable from the Training Section once logged in to their account.
Deary me.

Don’t speed and you’re all good. Obviously sometimes the limit isn’t clear but apart from that no excuses really.

A village I go through currently twice a week had these blue rinsed wombles standing on a patch of grass all taking turns to operate the camera and looking earnest. They all looked pretty bored because drivers were giving each other a friendly hello by flashing their lights before the village for all those that didn't have WAZE switched on. Now THAT is community spirit.

At least it stops them getting all frothy reading the daily mail and keeps some of the old "silver surfer" types plaguing this board with nonsense.

Let the "community" group nutters get to play cop for the day and feel all righteous in the crushingly boring meetings they hold.

Obv, for bonus points it is always fun to rev your engine as if you're about to launch hyper drive just after you pass the pensioners. 10 points if more than one of them turns round. Double points if they ALL turn round.

There's an idea for CSW - flash headlights at random people when they're driving around so the other driver assumes there's a speed trap up ahead and slow down....

They don’t need to. They are generally the ones getting the way of everything smile
