Just been on the TV news now.

More cars damaged than originally pictured. The owner of the Jaguar estimates £10,000 worth of damage.

The TV crew managed to very briefly speak to the farmer off-camera, who refused to be interviewed, but he said there was "a longstanding issue with parked cars, and a problem with visitors showing a lack of respect to local people".

10k? Right..

Will the selfish parkers be reported for obstructing the highway, I wonder?
grey area, what does obstructing mean ? if he tried to get a wide load down there like a combine harvester is would smash the walls out either side. Most drivers probably expect to leave a car or vans width (foolishly in a farming area)
I guess they might get a small fine but i suspect the farmer is going to have a lot of issues over this. I cant see his insurer paying out, no way.
It's pasture land, not crop land!

It was just an example ! Could have been a porta cabin on a low loader , could have been his new chieftain tank , my point is how wide does it need to be

The application of common sense requires some background knowledge. The knowledge that "farm machinery is wide and may need to come through this road on a Sunday" may not be within the experience of many city dwellers. And it only requires one person to be dumb enough to do it for everyone else to assume that it's OK.
Farm machinery is no wider than bin wagons or fire engines or other vehicles that are well within the frame of reference of urbanites.

Perhaps they don't even begin to contemplate that they might be in anything but a free leisure centre. More fool them.
They don't comprehend that they are not actually in the middle of nowhere. If they were in cow-country, they'd probably be blocking milk tankers.
I think you aren't giving them enough credit, or independent thought.

Some people know exactly what they are doing, before pretending they don't.

I hope they do go looking for a John Deere, because the tractor in the photo has silver wheels, so i might be a Massey. Rural police would be sniffing for anti freeze if they thought they were looking for green paint.

People parked like tts getting some karma.

It's a shame there isn't more tractor driving nutters in cities.

Interesting the number of people expressing delight at cars being deliberately damaged because they inconvenienced someone trying to drive past.

Does the same apply to cars parked on the pavement?
Yes. If someone is a enough of a selfish to block a pavement to the extent that pedestrians can no longer pass, then they deserve all they get.

My daughter has just stopped using a pram and stroller. The amount of times we have been on walks and we have had to either cross the road or go around a vehicle in the road beggars belief. So many people now simply do not care about where they dump their vehicle even when it completely blocks a path.

I have never done anything to damage vehicles that have been parked in such a stupid fashion. The temptation has been very strong though.

I'm glad the farmer did this. Maybe the inconsiderate gits will think about where they park next time.

Oh for gawd's sake.

Road tax or any kind of road fund duty was abolished by Winston Churchill in 1937, although it's reckoned the ring fencing of taxes to pay for roads was abandoned in 1925.

You've never paid a penny of road tax or road fund duty in your life, and nor has any other motorist. No money is ring fenced for roads, so you've never been able to contribute to the roads at any point in your life, aside possibly from toll roads (and the M6 Toll makes such a massive loss that the users of that road don't cover the upkeep either).

Funding for roads comes from general and local taxation, so basically the more tax you pay the more you pay for the roads. Whether the farmer in question pays more or less than the rest of us, I would neither know nor care.
Missing a parrot surely?

Farmers insurance will pay up, farmer will possibly get some points if he has a licence and a fine. Farmer will be a fking legend in his local and make back in free beer what he pays out on his fine.
Car drivers won’t park where they parked again and others will think twice.

Not sure it is that simple. Not everyone reads the news.

Hopefully the local highways dept will put double yellows down one side (or both sides at pinch points) and then it may mitigate future issues.

Makes for a great thread on ph, but as stated before - everybody loses.

The drivers just gormlessly copied each other, foolish but I’m not sure they ‘deserved’ this.

The farmer probably felt a liberating relief of frustration for 10 seconds and now has created a real problem for himself. Feel more sorry for him.

Maybe he’d watched ‘Falling Down’ the night before or summatt.

What offence would the points be for?

It's a shame some people need double yellows to save them from their own stupidity.
