Can't believe it's been five years, hopefully the proliferation of body cams that the security guards are now equipped with mean something like this wouldn't happen today.

Indeed. I think of this thread every time I'm in Sainsbury's and the self service checkout asks me if I want a receipt. Why do they even give you the chance to decline a receipt if there's no sensible mechanism for dealing with someone who doesn't have one when an issue arises?

Our nearest Sainsbury’s has just introduced barriers to leave the self checkout area where you need to scan the code from your receipt. Waste of paper and an inconvenience too

If I've got a small basket and the receipt is optional, I always ask the machine for a printed receipt.

Not because I'm worried about getting accused of anything. But simply so that Tesco (in my case) makes that little bit less in profit.

Same here. Also never had an argument with a member of the shop's staff either.

Couple of times I have had the contents of my bag checked. Never felt the need to get all upset about it either. Had I gone to a staffed checkout, the checkout operator would have checked every item anyway.

Inconvenience caused by thieves. At my local Sainsury self checkout last week no carrier bags to hand. I asked an assistant for a carrier bag. She scanned it before handing it to me. Then told me it was store policy since so many were being stolen.

So the scanning your receipt will be the same.

amazing they are worrying about an item being stolen that they used to give away free and only charged for because the law changed to make them.

They are not the same bags. They use to give out piss thin free bags. They were then told to charge 5p for them.

Some clever sausage realised most people will forget to bring their own bag and would have to buy what’s on offer. Hence the more expensive bag for life at 40p - whatever.

Now they are making a profit from the bags, they care.
