So the snooker isn't an urban myth then

Like the education programme. Wouldn't it be a great idea if we had a fleet of vehicles out doing this all day every day. They could do all this and so much more. Oh bugger, we used to you say?

Bloody politicians!

Dont get me wrong, I didn't believe that no-one would not have been going 100+ past you yesterday - I guess the marked car ensured against that.

Is was amusing to hear about the 'HALO' effect

I’ve always wondered something. On your shift in the traffic car, are you given daily tasks, or a certain route to cover (within your region), or is it a case of just drive around as much/little as you want/where you want, until you find something that’s wrong. Are you given a max/min number of miles you have to do. Obviously until 999 calls, etc require your assistance.

Just got in. Thanks for all your "post leaving the house posts", which made me chuckle!

Today's tally:

5 x HO RT/1 - not all older than R Reg!
Centre Lane Owner/Drivers "educated" - 2
Seat belt - 1 (fixed pen)
Cutting up - 1 "educated"
Tailgaters - 1 "educated"
Zig Zag waiting (including all purpose "Hazard Lights" - 1 (Endorsable fixed pen)
Roundabout mindreader - 1 "educated"/HO RT/1
Front foglights boy racer Chav types (nor Burberry, but matching "His and His" tracksuits) - 2 (fixed pens)
Mobile phone - 1 "educated"

Plus - kids on push bikes on a bowling green, relocating three kids from a domestic, abandoned 999 telephone call, going to an unconscious male because the nearest Ambulance was 20+ miles away, two kids fallen through a garage roof, stolen moped recovered from alley, targetted autocrime hotspot patrol, removing debris from dual carriageway at rush hour, roadworks checks, assorted paperwork (out of the nick, in the (stationary) car, and two toasted tea cakes and mug of tea at Mother's!

Doughnuts - ZEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOO!

Does seem that PHers owe you a doughnut or two then?!?!?!

Just to answer a few of your questions:

We don't have min/max mileage to cover. We do have target nominals and patrol we are supposed to look at, such as autocrime hotspots/offenders.

There is usually only one car for the whole division, and as all the other sectors are a bit short staffed, you can end up backing up colleagues (or being sent first) to just about anything that comes into the control room. One of the "perks" is a faster car, so you can sometimes get there first... unless it sounds like a non urgent ball acher, and you happen to know a scenic route...

On the other hand, there are days when you have that much paperwork to do, you either never leave the nick, or if you do, it's only to travel from A to B to C to get statements, measure up a scene or do n interview. And if you actually arrest someone, if the Custody Suite is already busy, it can sometimes take two hours just to get through the gate and boook them in...

It must be a bit scary being out on your own - well i would abe a bit scared as you never know what you will come across. Just wish there were more police on the roads.

excellent stuff WHM - well done and thanks!

It's great to see we can all agree on enforcing some things isn't it?

My personal favourites would be

people in a world of their own (middle lane drivers)
people who don't indicate

current favourite is 'people who have stopped to answer their phone cos they know they musn't drive and talk, but have selected just after a blind corner or somewhere equally stupid to stop'
