Even if the insurance company offers to sell the car to the op they're not going to sell it for peanuts if going by on here its worth circa 31k.

Rochdale Police. Well says it all.
hehe Not exactly sure what they do - certainly I wish they would put some traffic police around in the evenings; anywhere near the centre and it's like a racetrack with loads of bruthas flying round like idiots in souped up VAG stuff or of late C63AMGs (where'd they come from?). I won't drive my SLK around at night - I can't do with the tailgating, hassle, racist abuse or intimidation.

Back to the OP - the thought of what happens in these situations makes me feel sick at the thought of it. If I had lost 20K cash I'd be fking suicidal. Awful, and the OP has my sympathy. It's all very well saying "you're a mug, it was too cheap" but I'm sure that we've all suffered at some point from "shiny car syndrome". Another good reason to buy from a dealer and with a transfer or plastic I guess.

This is why I only buy from dealers these days. Many years back a mate got stung the same way but for way less cash. Never got his money or car back...

Saying that I've bought a 330i for around 5 grand and have never been to sellers house and only HPIed it after test drive but everything turned out ok. I did check the VIN against V5 and also double check owners address details and name though (he showed me driving license)

Best of luck OP. £20,000 is a LOT of money and ill go mental if it as me frown

i handed over the cash and the sellers son handed me the paper work for the car included the MOT/service history book and car v5c documents and the Manuel book for the car. I left the area very happy with my car.
You got a spanish chap called Manuel included in the deal too? Now that must have set alarm bells ringing...

Wow surprised to hear that! What protection do we have?

TX.
Hpi's T&C's make perfect sense.

If not people would be cloning cars, selling to mates and they would be claiming on Hpi's guarantee.

It would seem the OP has lost his money as this scheme is run by professionals on a daily basis and they know what they are doing. Finding these scumbags is hard, getting the money back, finding the money is almost always virtually impossible.

A % of the money has probably been spent already on a new car that they hope to sell at 20%+ less than market price to someone thinking they have an unbelievable deal.

Sorry OP. The only positive is that you learn't a valuable lesson. Many moons ago I bought a Montego 1.6 from a lock up garage in Poplar. It was dark and raining and it didn't even make it home to Putney. I called the guy back at his home and he said "buyer beware" and put the phone down. Although no where near as bad as your episode, £1200 lost from a 19 year old in 1992 is a lot of money.

This. It's exactly what they're supposed to guarantee against after all.
No it isn't. When you went to the HPI check, they checked the HPI for a car that you entered the details for. Just because someone cloned that car does not make the HPI company liable for the loss.
Actually they do, but not if it's more than £3k and you pay cash.

"12.5 The HPI Guarantee will not cover you for "cloned" vehicles (a "cloned" vehicle being a vehicle that has been stolen and given a false identity, normally that of an identical vehicle), where the purchase price of the vehicle was greater than £3000 and the purchase of the vehicle was made with cash. (The other terms of your guarantee are not affected.) We recommend that all vehicles are paid for via the banking system, such as, cheque or Bankers draft."
Must admit that paying £21,500 in cash is lunacy. At worst you might actually just be physically assaulted and the cash taken before you even get to see the car.

I've bought plenty of cars for cash but never more than a bag or two and I try to get the cash out from the bank once the deal has been done, e.g. car driven, paperwork checked, HPI done, etc.

Anyone who actually wanted to receive £21,500 in cash is 99% likely to be involved in something dodgy as it's pretty difficult to just pay that kind of money into an account anymore without questions being asked.

Electronic transfer everytime, unless the cash option is to protect yourself.

Out of interest Malachi, who's name is on the MOT/Service history documents? Are these all copies as I'm not sure how you get a copy MOT?

Do the MOT documents match the online MOT history?

As an aside - this information is not available on Hpi. Other than the number of keepers there is no info available under the DPA about who and where.

Who's property did you visited, and entered, when you bought the car? Have the police spoken with them?

It's got nothing to do with seeing anything, it's common sense! The car the OP HPI'd is fine, so HPI did its job, the OP just didn't spot that the car he was viewing was not the car he HPI'd - not the fault of HPI.

Precisely this.

A troll who has a sideline in writing soppy magazine articles, judging by this:

After reading all of the above, Possibly a good reason why the op hasn't replied as yet , from a personal point of view as quoted previously ive no problem in dealing with cash (its king of course) but dont be foolish with it maybe, AA inspection ,or camera mobile phones are rife , whats the problem with taking photo's of the seller and possibly a finger print , if the seller refused then that would confirm something isn't quite right so you would back off from parting with the cash

BMW X6 XDrive 2009 going for £22,000. I was over the moon because i had been looking for a 4X4 vehicle for a long time
Has anybody actually tried to off-road one of these beemers? The BMW X series may be four wheel drive but their not really 4X4's are they? In fact; isn't the X6 a little bit of a chocolate teapot? High centre of gravity, not an off-roader, lost headroom in the rear, no useful boot space.
In fact; you can load more in to the back of a 5 series tourer than an X5.
