The official line on MoD/Military Police is as follows. MoD police have the full powers of a Constable over ALL persons when acting within 10 miles of any Ministry of Defence property (and that is actually most of this country!!!!) in other words they can pretty much do whoever they choose for whatever, wherever. Military Police (includes RAF Police, Naval Provost & RM Police) have powers of arrest over military personel at all times, associated civilian personel (i.e wives, children, and civilian support staff) for arrestable offences at all times and all other persons when on MoD Property.

As for the Hornby Bobbies Fluck knows but I don't slow down for them either

I forgot to add there are always some "local" exceptions for Military Police and they are often sworn in locally with the full powers of a Constable dependant on where in the world this is it often extends there powers to cover all civilians (i.e iraq, the Falkland Islands, Diego Garcia, and on occasions some UK garrison towns)

Very informative that...thanks..

Military Police can occasionally have very very sweeping powers, when I worked in Diego Garcia I was sworn in with the full powers of a constable PLUS the full powers of a Customs Officer as a Royal Overseas Police Officer (ROPO) this gave us the right to arrest Civilians, US military personel, UK military personel. The right of entry without a warrent and the ability to board, search and sieze any vessel within 200 miles of the Island Group, all very judge Dredd we were effectively "The Law". On one occassion we even arrested a CIA officer for carrying an undeclared Glock 9mm and confiscated it, en route to Somarlia (which wouldn't have been a problem had he told us he had it).

These powers are historic and pretty damm draconian but if you look at the history of how we actually set up the Islands and forcefully repatriated the indiginous population aren't that suprising. The last true bit of "Gun Boat Diplomacy"

WoW some excellent replies. I can't wait to come across MOD Bobbies in the car.....

I'm still a little unsure about the BT plod. I good friend of mine works for the met and his view is they would have to call into a local nick and get a traffic car out to do the nicking. It's unlikely the speed could be determined BUT "excess" speed could and might get you 3 points and a fixed pen. if you were a cheeky SOB (flick the finger, pull out a train ticket, laugh etc....

Some posts asked why I overtook a police car?

If the driver had been driving at 80 in a proper manor maybe I'd have just crept past him or stayed behind. As in this case he was driving at 100-110mph straddling the white lines on the approach to cars ahead I figured he was a T**T (I've never seen traffic drive like this - 10-2, only pick nose with the handbrake on and the car in neutral etc..) so I figured I'd wind him up and shadow for a few miles, let him know I was aware, wait for him to speedup (I'd do the same) or more likely slow down [guilt?] so I'd then overtake him - not burn past but quick enough to "engage", either not get a tug (unlikely) or get pulled over for a chat about the benefits of diesel electric over steam in terms of finding body parts in "1 unders"

Maybe I need to grow up.............

Slightly off topic; why do we have transport police? Do they have powers/training that regular BiB don't? And, do they still have hieght restrictions as every BT copper i've seen is built like a Prop Forward?
