my friend got pulled for no apparent reason the other day. the bib gave the reason of a moving traffic offence but when he explained it we clearly hadnt committed it. anyway he asked to breathalyse my friend, who then said i could just lie and say id had one drink so you'd have to sit with me for 20 minutes - good way to get his car ripped apart i thought. it was a minor inconvenience but i certainly dont mind the presence of police patrols, they're far better than scameras. plus, he gave us directions as we were lost. it earned them some brownie points with me, they need all they can get with the endless scameras around nowadays

A clearer thinking society might make being shitfaced part of the driving test. Lets face it if you cant drive properly after a couple of drinks should you be driving at all? I think I would rather be driven home by Ayrton Senna hammered, than my mates wife sober. Actually, I know I would.

She drives worse than a dead person?

Erm on balance yeah I reckon Sennas corpse would have better road sense. I am not joking she is bloody scary. Accidents are a probability rather than a possibilty.

Far as I'm concerned zero tolerance is the only way - if you want to drink then you damn sure don't go anywhere near a car for a lengthy period of time afterwards.

If I go out socially and and need to drive at any point within the next 24 hours then I stay on soft drinks - I've been known not to drive for a whole weekend because I had a session on a Friday night.

It's high time people learned that alcohol and driving do not mix - I'd like to see the police being given the power to randomly stop people.
Such powers would also do a large amount to combat the uninsured drivers etc who seem to be abundant these days.

If people have nothing to hide then I don't think they'll object to the occasional hold up in order to remove people from the road who have no business being there. I know I'd welcome it.

We can already randomly stop people under S163 road trafic act for any reason.

Actually, I thought the only "reason" a police officer could stop you was to check your driving documents. Once stopped, however, the officer is basically free to investigate anything that catches their attention (e.g. smelling of alcohol etc)?

Could you exercise that right a bit more often please, starting with the muppets who think that fog lights are cool, and continuing with those who seem to think that the inside lane of the motorway isn't for use by cars, and maybe you could finish with those who think that having a full set of working bulbs is a luxury!!

(sorry if I appear to be ranting on, but the seeming lack of policing of these basic things really annoys me!!)

Nope as long as you are driving a mechanically propelled vehicle on a road then you must stop on being required to do so by a constable.

No reason is needed in law. But the majority of stops will always be check documents / vehicle defects / manor of driving etc
