It won't piggy back off airwave but 999 call will jump to the telephone network with the best signal even if it's say EE and you're on Virgin.
BossHogg - do you use Tetra/Airwave units? One assumes you do as the police can then communicate direct with you if so needed via the one terminal.

We do, and we have done on a regular basis. We have a "hailing" channel that the police can drop onto to communicate with us directly.

Obviously you will need to get out of your vehicle. If there is a large enough gap in traffic, or traffic is light, get yourself over to the hard shoulder to a place of safety. If you are near an orange emergency phone, inform our control room immediately. Failing that, phone 999 and give what motorway you are on, direction of travel and the nearest marker post number. Even better would be a marker plate as that gives you the motorway, carriageway and marker post number. Marker plates are 500m apart, marker posts are 100m apart.

How many times does your car stop dead if it breaks down? I've crossed all lanes of traffic with no power ie coasting to a halt on the hard shoulder. I'd think getting across and using whatever momentum is key.

It's happened quite a few times, in fact it happened to one of our patrols yesterday, driver had been drinking the old fire water and had stopped in lane three. Patrol approached scene under a block, police arrived at the same time. Driver was lifted and car driven to hard shoulder to await recovery.

Quite. It isn't difficult.

It's always a challenge, a time to be beaten. I can't see why it upsets people.

As a Highways maintenance Op I regularly have contact with traffic officers at incidents or over Airwaves when we are doing potholes under a rolling block and the like.

You guys are all alright in my book thumbup

In which case do you drive one of the disco's or mitsubushis and can you see out the back window?
