E Scooters soon to be allowed on UK roads?

Could you imagine if bicycle use was dictated by the general public. Bikes would be banned in seconds, as clearly all cyclists are homicidal maniacs intent on killing pedestrians, dogs and small children. And when not killing things they're causing £billions of damage to innocent vehicles and causing hours and hours of traffic jams for each motorist. The complaints would be endless.
It's almost like you don't believe that anti-social cretins use a wide range of different types of transport.PF62 said:
Then they were deluded as most of the electric scooters I have seen being used illegally before these schemes launched were being used in exactly these anti-social ways.
Not entirely. You have witnessed people using them with no explicit guidelines to adhere to so they’ll follow their own path, whether that takes them on road, cycle path or pavement. Sounds like there were rules attached to the hire of these scooters in terms of where they can / cannot be ridden, which is different to the free for all everywhere else. People ignored the rules that they would have placed a tick against to indicate compliance, subsequently the trial has been ‘paused’
People outside these trial areas still shouldn’t be riding them on public land but continue to do so and will carry on as usual.

Well what a surprise - electric scooters are being used anti-socially on pavements and in pedestrianised areas.
What on earth did they expect?
I’m guessing they expected them to be used mostly sensibly like they are in other countries.Well what a surprise - electric scooters are being used anti-socially on pavements and in pedestrianised areas.

They are used all over London for sensible commuting purposes with almost no one noticing.
As I said in my post above, you aren't going to spend £500 on buying your own scooter then draw attention to yourself by riding dangerously or chucking it in a canal.
To read some of the posts just above the fact that I own and use an e-scooter (xaomi m365pro to be precise) suggests I'm some rabid law breaker who is a menace to society that people need protecting from.
Bollix to that. I recognise that it is against the 19th century law to ride them on the road and I break that law regularly after careful thought. At no time has anyone, or anything been inconvenienced or endangered by my popping down the shops or the post office on my scooter. On the busier roads I use the cycle lanes, tend to turn right by getting off and using pedestrian crossings and I am ultra courteous should I come across a pedestrian when on shared sections. The reality in London is that no one gives a toss unless you are doing something stupid, which they probably did before on a bike, and most people want a go on it.
I love it, its fun and I take my dog for a run in certain areas by wobbling along in the parks alomgside her at 3kph as I can only walk about 20 yards right now.
Its brilliant fun as well.

- riding through pedestrianised shopping centres, both indoors and outdoors.
- swapping on and off the pavement to the road without a glance.
- weaving through pedestrians on zebra crossings and ignoring red lights.
But did anyone really thinks these idiots would have a sudden epiphany when the rental schemes came in and start riding sensibility?

No, the majority of cyclists I encounter are far better behaved than the anti-social electric scooter riders, with few cyclists using the pavement and generally only the MAMILs not wanting to upset their pace by stopping for pedestrian crossings, and I cannot ever recall encountering a cyclist riding through an indoor shopping area.
I'd suggest that either group contains a share of arses. It would appear that cyclists look down on escooters as inferior. Cycles are more lifestyle, i suspect.silverthorn2151 said:

172 miles all peacefully ridden with no incidents, multiple police cars passed and only one puncture. Was even asked to unfold mine and demo it inside a petrol station as the assistant was so taken with it.
This thread is fairly well aligned to comments sections in local newspapers so it’s fun to dip in and see what people are getting worked up about this week but in reality not much is moving on (unless you count us scooter riders going about our business).

Pure Electric introduced their own range recently and they are well regarded.

Scooter rental company Voi announced last night that all their scooters will be fitted with large 5-digit numberplates in an effort to make riders easily identifiable, in an attempt to end antisocial behaviour.
Voi says that the level of antisocial behaviour on rental scooters is worse in England than anywhere else in Europe.
“We haven’t seen this level of antisocial behaviour in any other market. We have had great experience of it but the volume of it in the UK was quite surprising.”

I said on a different thread yesterday that I am embarrassed to be British these days, and this is yet another small piece of evidence that I’m right to be embarrassed.

And of course now anyone riding a scooter without a licence plate is going to be obviously riding an illegal scooter.

Did some zooming around on my electric scooter this morning. It was awesome.
Tomorrow I plan to commit some murders, fraud and then maybe a bit of burglary. It just seems like a logical thing to do after breaking one law I should do some more, right?
And zipping off on the getaway scooter. Doesn't quite have the glamour of an old Jag pursued by by a Granada. Guv.Tomorrow I plan to commit some murders, fraud and then maybe a bit of burglary. It just seems like a logical thing to do after breaking one law I should do some more, right?

Well, such is the idiocy of trying to formulate public policy by relying on a hire scooter scheme.
Doesn't make me ashamed to be British but makes me despair at the morons making some decisions.
You don't have to worry about e-scooters to come to that conclusion. Just look at the events of the last 9 months!!Doesn't make me ashamed to be British but makes me despair at the morons making some decisions.
