If the traffic is not too busy I try driving with the cruise control set at a little over 70 (so my actual speed is probably a little under 70). I do this mainly because you're more likely to get lasered when it's quieter and faster cars stand out more.
I get 2 problems
1)other drivers speed is very inconsistant - you'll pass them, then they pass you ete etc.
2)I end up travelling at about the same speed as half the other vehicles on the road - so overtaking takes an age - in practise you end up speeding up a little, but often the car I'm passing speeds up a little too, so it's awkward to slow back down again.
The whole thing flows better if you're doing an indicated 85-90 because you're going fast enough to cleany pass the other traffic and you can easily let the people doing 100 go past.

Well obviously it depends on the traffic density, but unless the motorway is very busy (in which case higher speeds are difficult to maintain) I find things are easier when I'm travelling a bit faster than the general traffic speed. I therefore do most of the overtaking which is a more easily controlled situation.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

hi - I have to say that the old view of 100 is no faster than 60 is a bit old hat. On a 100 mile trip, that would take 100 minutes at 60mph, I would expect to do that in 60 minutes at 100mph.... which is about when the tank empties.

Soooooooo. Maybe it applies to cages, but certainly doesn't to bikes. Unless you get nicked of course, which tends to add to the journey time.

I find that choosing the correct lane at roundabouts makes a huge difference when in car, speed a bit less so. But it does add up to a lot of minutes over a long journey. The maths is undeniable !

We are still talking minutes.....m i n u t e s

The things we waste in the bog, on the phone to mother-in-law, in queues etc etc...but with the risk of points, fines etc etc.

How many journeys really really need to be made quickly?

Street

Let's get REALLY safety (or money saving) then Street! what about 40 mph max on motorways. That should solve ALL wouldn't it. Pity the rest of Europe already thinks we're nuts and it would and already IS crippling the economy! Oh! My journey to Scotland now takes 1.5 to 2 hrs more AND in my opinion is MORE dangerous than before even in light traffic. It depends on what YOU call "quick"? Sorry! have to disagree!
