You chose to mess about with the plate.
You were stopped.
You put another funny plate on.
You - not unsurprisingly - got stopped again.
You put another funny plate on.
You get stopped AGAIN & the officer, by now fed up with you taking the piss, reports you for summons. (I've no idea what him not being a 'traffic policeman' has got to do with anything)

You could keep the reg, get a correct plate made for on road use & then fit your other efforts as show plates when the car is not being used on the road. There wouldn't then be a problem.

Definitely.

There is no way this can be a serious thread, surely.

If it is there's no hope for the human race...

ETA:...

You walked into the party like you were walking onto a yacht
Your hat strategically dipped below one eye
Your scarf it was apricot
You had one eye on the mirror as you watched yourself gavotte
And all the girls dreamed that they'd be your partner
They'd be your partner, and...

You're so vain, you probably think this song is about you
You're so vain, I'll bet you think this song is about you
Don't you? Don't You?

I've had a private plate for years. Amazingly the police never pull me over.

Probably because I'm not a mong who is unable to put a plate on my car without confirming to legislation.

be fascinating to hear the outcome of the court day.

Don't forget there's lots of advise on here about representing yourself as a "freeman" in court.

That's definitely the way to go.

I haven't read the whole thread and do not intend to. The plate is illegal, so it's your problem. Put it right.

Why are you so fussed about having it say your nick name? Does it mean that much to you that you are willing to put up with all this aggro ?

I feel that the DVLA do sell the plates and make a massive profit doing so with the knowledge that people will bunch up letters together etc to get the plate to read what is being sold.
DVLA are even advertising them as such, showing you the real plate and then in brackets what it could look like if you fked about with it.

I saw a DVLA for a pre 1963 plate 130 OKY and then in brackets it read (BOOKEY) So a govt body are selling an item and showing you the appeal of using the item illegally!!
Can you provide a link?

Don't listen to all these NEGATIVE COMMENTS. The police are clearly in the wrong here as you should obviously be able to as YOU WANT, not conform to THEIR STUPID LAWS.
You need to consult a FREEMAN OF THE LAND. Let us know how you get on at court as we'd all love to know....

No disrespect but I stopped reading about half way through your post. The bottom line is that your plate isn't legal so the cop isn't actually at fault for enforcing the law. Doesn't the DVLA have the power to remove the plate from your ownership following repeated fines etc?

This was a few years back. DVLA were having a huge sale of plates and loads of them had the possible misinterpretation in brackets.

Lawsy, try looking at this from another point of view.

What it you were crossing zebra crossing one day and a car didn't stop, hit you and drove off.
Fortunately you saw the plate; so you tell the police from your hospital bed.

But the plate you saw and remembered isn't the real plate. The police have drawn a blank, no-one to claim off the insurance for etc etc.

There are real reasons we need number plates that are clearly identifiable as what they are. Not just for ANPR, but the proper reason, that you and every other driver is identifiable when you or someone else fks up as is bound to happen now and again.

I couldn't give a rats ass about spacing, but turning 17 in A... you may as well just remove your plates. Would you think that is ok?
This is interesting. The government says its imperative that number plates have to be perfect so members of the public can read them correctly, yet on the other hand they seem quite happy to turf kids out of school without the ability to read an write. confused

LAWSY1 said:
Guys, opinions please:
I have a private reg on my 911 turbo that 'pretty much' reads LAWSY, as that is my nickname as all my friends know me. The actual plate is L17WSY. With an upright number 7 and a number plate screw cover between the 1 and 7. The number 7 looks very much like the letter A. When i originally purchased this plate in 1994 - the year the number was first advertised BY THE DVLA - I would appropriately miss space the lettering and use a French 7 with a line thru' so it read LAWSY pretty much perfectly. Of recent times, with plod seeming to have very little better to do, I have been pulled and fined £30, then £40 now £60 and finally now a summons. The crazy thing is, NOW the plate is "perfectly legally spaced" and the 'only' thing not 100% right is the more upright vertical line of the number 7.
99.9% of police NEVER bother me. The plate gets correctly recognised when being followed by a police car, with their onboard machine(whatever this is called) and by speed cameras, as I have been nicked twice in the last 18 months etc.
My real problem, is that 1 particular policeman, who is the one responsible for the summons, is the reason i have to attend court. What irritates me immensely is that, when he pulls you, in his panda car - he is not a traffic policeman - he is very arrogant, borderline rude and we pretty much get in an argument with me telling him that he surely has FAR MORE IMPORTANT THINGS TO DO. Also, that surely the cars road worthiness, IE: MOT, TYRES, TAX and INSURANCE are SURELY more important. He NEVER bothers with any of these however and just takes great pleasure being an absolute arse. I AM NEVER RUDE TO HIM AS HE IS A POLICE OFFICER AND I HAVE THE UPMOST RESPECT FOR THE VAST MAJORITY OF THEM WHO DO A GREAT JOB. However, I am going to court on March 22nd 2015 to be treated like a criminal, due to this clown! The situation is made worse, due to the fact that when i purchased the plate from the DVLA in 94' ALL OF THEIR PLATES WERE ADVERTISED MISS SPACED in the NATIONAL PRESS. I bought this plate from the DVLA to display it in the way it was PRESENTED and MISS SOLD to me. This policeman is using the DVLA is his 'motivation' and reason to take me to court. He is also telling lies in his statement to the court with relation to his opening statement to me the day he pulled me. As his opening gambit - which was clearly intended to rile me - was "You must remember me, i'm the officer you called a superstar last time we met" His statement claims nothing to this effect.
I am so pissed off with this whole situation, i have purchased a different 'dateless' plate and will be selling the existing one.
IN SUMMARY I WANT OPINIONS FROM THOSE IN THE KNOW TO HOW BEST DEAL WITH THIS
snigger.
