Scientific research in Italy has recently shown that people drive more safely when travelling faster. They've just upped the speed limits to 93mph on 3 lane roads.

You can show anything you bloody want with statisitcs.

Hell this government said it wouldn't increase income tax. They just put 1% on NI instead. Sure we can trust them.

Or maybe I can just see both sides of the argument - which is half way to winning it.

Some other points - why are the opinions of the people questioned in the surveys any less valuable than your own?

Can ANYONE find ANYWHERE a survey that supports the view that camera's are unpopular?

spn, try looking at it in a different way, ie who does the surveys, what motivation they have and who are they. The only organisation that gives the motorist a voice is the ABD and they are hardly ever given any media space, but, if you read any of their literature you'll find plenty of evidence to support the counter argument that you ask for.

There are a lot of organisations who have vested interests in the perpetuation of the 'safety camera' and they invest a lot of time and money to do this. Think of the benefits for the Government in terms of revenue, public opinion re safety etc and then do a spot of research for yourself with an open mind. How many cameras do you see on an open road at a safe spot for overtaking, hidden behind a road sign/bush/tree, on a motorway, 'statistically' the safest of all our road systems. then note how many are in built up areas, by schools etc. There will be some of the latter but there are a hell of a lot more of the former.

As I said before, most of us favour cameras at junctions, near schools, in accident blackspots (although I find it a bit cynical to put a camera in an accident blackspot rather than re-design the road)but we have enough sense to see the true purpose in the use of these things.

The other point is that people have been breaking speed limits for bloody years and we've all managed to survive (with some of the safest roads in Europe).

The massive over enforcement caused by these mechanical highwaymen has changed the balance for the worse.

I have a question for SPN.

Maureen from driving school dosn't speed, I do where conditions allow.
You have to pick one of us to drive your children across the country which one do you pick safe Maureen or "dangerous" me cos I ocasionary speed?
she has to be safer she has a driving licence and she dosn't speed right?
