Entering this debate a bit late, but wondering what the 'victim surcharge' is. If I'm caught speeding, surely there is no victim? Unless I've hurt or inconvenienced someone due to me speeding. Which is probably a different offence
The victim surcharge goes to a central fund to aid the victims of crime. The victim doesn't have to be an immediate victim in a specific case. Some may say that members of society are victims of those drivers who choose to use excess speed. Some would agree with that some would not.

Or you could argue that it is a New Labour stealth tax. Who can argue against the morality of a tax that punishes criminals, after all. Some may say that members of society are victims of those drivers who choose to use excess speed. Some would agree with that some would not.

In the last few weeks I have noticed a new one just before jnt10 anticlock, the actual cameras are hidden by trees until you are almost on top of them.
Is it right before the new ish services on M25 near the A3? Noticed it myself the other week and as you say they have allowed trees etc to grow up on the traffic side but trimmed them on the other! Same with the 3 cctv cameras. TX.
I'm used to spotting these around sections of the M25, but after travelling around the country quite a bit over the last few weeks i've been very surprised, although probably shouldn't be, at how widely used they are now across almost every motorway. I guess this explains why everybody is resigned to the futility, and just drives around in the middle lane at 70-80mph... despite the lovely new 4-lane sections with the now-outside 2 lanes empty

For anyone who doesn't believe that the M25 HADECS system enforces a NSL, I'm now looking at the paperwork for M25 Epping Post 5563A. Speed limit: 70 mph. Court hearing pending.
You don't need to convince me. I'm not doing more than 79 past any of them whatever anybody says. And I want to be doing anywhere north of a ton, so it's bloody inconvenient.cmaguire said:
Enforcing NSL ain't over 90mph.
I am aware of that. I have always told people that these cameras were active under NSL conditions, contrary to what several people have said on here. I have also seen quite a few tickets under NSL conditions, however none so far have had a recorded speed under 90MPH, hence my question.Geekman said:

Taking AGTLaw literally then 70 + 10% + 2 gives 79.That's the generally accepted cut-off for 70mph enforcement so I assume he means that.
I would accept that far more readily than all the people on here suggesting either 90 or a ton is the cut-off because I'm not inclined to believe the State/Councils are doing anyone any favours at the expence of personal gain.

Andrew is a motoring lawyer. I would be surprised if anyone used his services for a ticket which could be dealt with by 3 points or an SAC. I could well be wrong of course, let's wait for his reply....That's the generally accepted cut-off for 70mph enforcement so I assume he means that.

Fair enough.Maybe his involvement is more to do with the use of the cameras with no limit displayed than the actual speed.

It's quite interesting to read our local newspaper as they report speeding fines on the Essex section of the M25.
This is just the latest batch, but there's a pattern here, it seems like the gantry cameras are set to catch people at >100. There are a few like this every week.

, of North Street, Romford was fined £440, given six penalty points, and ordered to pay victim surcharge of £44 and £90 costs for driving along the M25 at Epping at a speed of 100mph, in excess of the 70mph speed limit.

I'm guessing that the Epping camera above is the same camera that is now starting to appear in the local rag. All are all 100+ So far that I've read, so I'm interested to know what it pings at. If so, it would be nice if they could be relied upon to be the same nationwide. Gassing Station | Speed, Plod & the Law | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
