Whaaaaat! Crikey you're right, I'd better change the various comments I've made in this post that say exactly that... Oh wait...

I've shared it to show all the bollards, the kids (there is one if you look closely), the dinosaurs and how stupidly fast I was going.

The original contains sounds including a thud, me telling the lady she's opened the door into the car and her saying I've reversed into her door. You know, the one that isn't there.

Ah. I can normally tell whether anyone's in a car that I'm about to park next to. Astonishingly - just by looking.
That is indeed simple. How do you predict exactly when and what they are about to do?

Ah well this is the thing - because I can't predict that I'll wait until I'm sure the other person has seen me. smile

Opening a door is still driving.

The other thread.

My crystal ball was working wink

PS what speed would you have to enter a space to ensure that you could avoid any door flung open? Clue: the answer is an integer <1.
Bloody hell, the back of your car is almost level with her front wheel when she opens the door.
I don't think she should be allowed out unaccompanied TBH

Just remembered I had similar happen to me, woman and husband were noodling about in their boot as I reversed into a space.
As I was slowly reversing he walked down the gap between the cars and opened the door at which point I stopped.
Disagreement ensued, he threatened me with a hammer before driving off.

A***holes the lot of 'em

Agreed. Sound removed because there was no thud sound. Looks like OP just slammed the brakes on, in a car which already had a scrape, trying to scam an innocent lady just minding her own business in her Mini.

This is one reason why I usually drive forwards into parking space between two cars.
Wonder why so many premises adopt "Reverse park only", apart from it being safer when you drive out.

But that has been thrashed to death on PH's........

Hmm, wonder how a self-driving car will solve for this?

With enough experience, I am guessing the AI will learn to spot not just that there is a person sitting in their car, but also be able to identify they are the type likely to open their door without looking*, and either slow down reversing or choose a different space.

  • No comment here on the characteristics. Please feel free to propose your own list...

Clearly not safer when you drive in though smile

Depends on whether being more manoeuvrable makes thing safer or more dangerous.

You know what to do next time.

Smash her wing mirror off and never go to that supermarket at the same time on the same day again.
He’s absolutely right you know.

Her attitude would have forced me to wait until she was in the supermarket, and no one else was looking, then carefully stove her drivers door in with a single well placed kick.

Then simply drive off and feel satisfied that she may possibly reconsider her attitude in future.

I used to ride motorbikes for quite a few years. Smashing the mirror off a car that has just cut you up or pulled out on you was very popular. I didn’t do it, but I saw it done plenty of times.

Sometimes inflicting expense and inconvenience on someone is the only way they will learn.

I just watched the OP’s video.

I don’t think he could have reversed any more slowly or carefully if he tried.

I would certainly have reversed into that gap with slightly more speed and potentially less care.

Mini-woman needs to actually look before she flings her fking car door open in future.

Very annoying.

I refer you to my post above for the solution.

A good driver would see that there is someone in the car, noticed they were distracted and sound the horn to make them aware of your presence. That is what the horn is for. Instead OP just rams into the space and damages the poor womans car.

I think he's part right. You can see in the vid that someone is in the car... . I think I might have honked (but I'd be going in front first), not so easy to do when reversing though. Swings and roundabouts.

Whilst I agree that ‘legally’ it won’t be clear cut, it is my opinion that if you are the one opening a car door, you take a good look around first to make sure you aren’t going to open it into a pedestrian, cyclist, or the path of a moving car.

You don’t just fling a car door open and expect everyone else to avoid it.

You open it when you are sure that no one is going to crash into it or walk into it.

Before I open my car door I always have a look out and glance in the mirror, because that’s just common sense.

It's going to get pretty honky out there if we're all expected to cover all the "might do this..." actions of every other motorist.
