I would suggest that the answer is for everyone to simply remove thier numberplates in protest.

I guess this is why the gov't is planning urgent action to make numberplates non-removable with special screws/fastenings. They say it's to prevent numberplate theft and I'm sure that's relevant re cloning, but it's much more in line with their thinking that it's actually to do with this national monitoring system.

It really is incredible that a national "we know where you are" database is founded on bits of plastic that can be obscured, lost or switched, and that in any case only identify the car not the driver. You can see why the gov't is having to erode the "innocent until proved guilty" standard, because otherwise this couldn't work at all.

Out of interest, what is the penalty for not displaying a number plate? And if enough of us did it, we'd overload the system anyway. Bloody good idea

Think it's a £30 fixed penalty, no points on the licence. (Bet that would change pretty quick!)

And when the numberplate is broken in a minor accident ... ? - Streaky

Big storage arrays are not a problem. In another few years all legitimately bought number plates will contain an RFID tag which will pass other data (MOT date, owner details, etc) to roadside readers linked to the system.

I wonder how much of it will work on my 6 volt matchless motorbike with the black rear numberplate

I must say, I'm getting a bit fed up of living my life being treated as a suspect by the state.

Squeeze the number plate in the microwave and fire it up for a few seconds, that should do the trick!

they will just make having a broken/ missing/ obscured plate endorsable as suggested above.

It seems to me that we should be entitled to have dirty license plates in order to protect ourselves from criminals who might use that information to track us down.

If the police want to know my license plate number they can ask me, after all its not them I am hiding from...

Not really sure why anyone would chance getting caught stealing number plates when they are readily available from several places advertising on Ebay with no ID needed.

Will this also be used as a giant specs system? if you decide to have a day out in Brighton for example, the system I presume can tell the time & where you were at the start of your journey, then if you arrive in Brighton earlier than 60 & 70 mile per hour limits would dictate can you expect to get a summons? As earlier mentioned on this thread, I am really getting fed up with every aspect of my life becoming more & more accountable to strangers.

Damn right, it was me, and I meant it. I never signed up for 24hr surveillance. I'm an ordinary abider of reasonable laws kind of geezer, but this is just OTT. I'm gonna start putting towels over cameras in protest. Enough is enough.
