Carl's got a point. Schools and local councils need to acknowledge that Fat Lazy Kids get dropped off at school by car and that the local road(s) and school premises should be modified to cope with it.

Let's design out the risk rather than try to patch it with GATSOs.

For a Gatso to be of use outside a school the setting needs to be adjusted by time. During school hours the limit should be 15-20 mph and the Gatso set accordingly. During evenings, nights and holidays it should revert to the normal speed limits.

Actually I'm gonna be different, and disagree with this. But only because I want to raise the point that little by little, we are ALL being influenced by the HYPE.

With careful road design, and suitable road furniture, schools can be made into safer places. How?

Simply create a proper full size car park for those stupid parents to collect their kids, thus eliminating parked cars on the road outside the school.

8ft tall railing to prevent kids crossing the road except at designated, warden controlled crossings. Railings on other side of road to prevent kids loitering in the danger zone.

Speed limit could be 30mph as usual, the key is to keep vehicle and pedestrian apart !!! Infact why not place the school at the end of a long spur road, and NOT on a main road?

Thus with a bit of cash, we could reduce accidents to almost zero, while keeping traffic free flowing.

Easy, huh?

rgds, Carl.

I agree absolutely. Actually in the same way as new drivers can't tow without additional training now (good idea) It should be mandatory for all parents to undertake a driving with children course, at their expense of course. This could cover such things as not turning round to listen to the child while driving. Preparing the travelling food so as it is secure and easily accessible. A new maxim of "clunk click Thomas in tape machine" every trip could be introduced. Finally driving technique for arriving at school at normal speed (instead of pretending your driving an egsheel) and leaving school at normal speed having dropped off the kids, instead of the whoopee I'm going blank (shopping, shagging, college, council meeting, WI, eating disorder counselling, AA etc) Grand Prix!!! Oh and by the way as long as my kids are in the schoolyard I don't give a sh@t about the other buggers aproach which we see all too regularly.

The spin off from all this would be the public information films would keep all the greenies in the media occupied for weeks using their creative tallents to "really do something for a change" instead if p@ssing us all off with their current line in drivel.

Can't get to sleep so thought i'd check here for some solace. Got that shi**ing new song from that annoying band Blue in my head (damn radio). Sorry if anyone actually likes them, but they annoy the crap out of me. Anyway, regarding standard of driving, I really think some instructors are teaching a load of bollocks, mainly to women, and that the examiners are not examining for the right things.

Two women were arguing with me, and really believing they are right because they independently came up with the idea and joined forces when the second one was asked her opinion, that roundabouts are first come first serve!!!

I tried to explain that you were supposed to give way to your right but they wouldn't have any of it. They are absolutely convinced that when you get to a roundabout, you go for it so as to be first. How f**king dangerous is that??!!! At first I thought that they had maybe misunderstood the rules and considered that the car on the roundabout had right of way, but they said that was not what they meant. They had been told without a doubt that it was definitely first come first serve. They knew nothing of the give way to traffic on your right rule. It didn't exist in their minds. According to them, their instructor could not be wrong. Now if someone needs a punch, that instructor does!!

Carl, I actually agree with you that car parks and railings should be in place, rather than Gatsos. I only said 'If Gatsos are to be of any use'.
