The fact reports are so rare that they have a news article on one woman getting hurt shows the assumed dangers are probably not as bad as some hoped. For example, how many people have died riding bikes in the same time period? I don’t need to look up the statistic to know it is significantly higher.
Looking at the ONS data over ten times as many people die of injuries not related to road accidents as do so. As a whole dying in a road accident is less than half a percent of total deaths, it is easy to see why it is not considered as a major risk.

I’d love to have one for nipping to town (4 miles) to pick up a bit of shopping for example. Problem is I don’t really fancy the points on my driving licence and the associated costs with that for the next 5 years.

So for me, whilst it’s a nice idea and the chance of getting stopped are probably minimal no thanks.

A pity they don't apply the same mathematical logic to covid.

Doesn't stack up quite so well, there were approx 80,000 more deaths in 2020 than 2019, the deaths per capita were only as bad as they were in 2003 and earlier though. Compared to other causes Covid is more like 15% - 20% rather than less than 0.5% for road deaths.

You admit that the only reason there was more deaths in 2020 was because the population increased, and then say 20% of those deaths were due to something that didn't exist in 2019. Your figures are laughable but I won't detract the thread away from e-scooters, so we'll have to agree to disagree and go back to discussing the original topic.

Fair enough, they are ONS figures and I didn't say anything about population increase being the reason.

I saw one just now being ridden on the road, frankly I'd rather they were on the path, this one, was clearly not restricted, big chunky thing, with biggish wheels ad possibly suspension, only thing was, it was black, and the rider was in black, head to foot, I only knew he was there when it shot past me, how long before one of those gets squished by a driver who never saw them.

I doubt it would be possible to go that fast on a path thereby introducing some sort of limit to the speed.

I exclusively ride my EE scooter on the road, not just because I think that’s the right place to do it, but because the pavement is full of ruts, curbs and other rubbish including people that make the journey so much longer and more difficult.

Looking forward to these becoming legal for personal use

I followed one of those scooters yesterday evening for 2 miles along a 20 mph road and at 1 point it was doing a solid 28mph with 2 kids on it.
It didn't look at all safe but tbh it seemed to work and had it not been for the risk of points I would take 1 to work no probs

Sounds like a new group of people aiming to make up for the decrease in organ donations.

Me too but round here there are so many private roads & estates that I can get to either end of the local town barely going on a normal road. The roads I do go on are 30mph & have passing width so noone gets inconvenienced for long.

The 49-year-old also tested positive for cannabis, was wearing headphones and was not using the designated cycle lane

lol

The amount of people that smoke weed behind the wheel of something actually dangerous, like a car, or van is HUGE, as if this is an issue.

Indeed.

The pillock in that article was likely to kill/injure himself, but not particularly likely to hurt anyone else. He still needs to be properly dealt with for his stupidity, which I presume the French police are doing.

People speed, drink drive, drug drive, drive dangerously, and other such things every single day in cars, trucks, vans etc. The fact that some idiots also do it while riding a scooter is a surprise to precisely no one.

To be honest, I would rather they did it while riding a scooter than driving their car.

I took one of the hire ones out yesterday.

My main gripe is that it was too slow. 12.5 mph / 20 kph. I might not average much more on my commuting bike, and the power up the hills was most welcome. But for dealing with traffic situations like roundabouts, and dual carriageway right turns (a particular urban DC with a 30 mph speed limit), on the commuting bike, I'm able to accelerate to 25 mph and keep up with the traffic.
On the bike

That ability makes certain traffic situations much more comfortable.
