I used the Hertz ‘One’ one way rental for years with no problems - it was particularly useful for moving stuff from Scotland to the Midlands. Combining it with Blabla Car ride share the journey was almost free.
Last week at Birmingham airport I picked up a Polestar from them, but was informed due to computer problems they couldn’t access the existing damage report. I received it in an email 30 minutes later and funnily enough it didn’t show this:
I emailed this photo back to them immediately, but still had an argument on return (“it’s not on the damage report”) and had to insist on a receipt showing no new damage given to me there and then.

One of my colleagues (who lives elsewhere in Europe) booked a Focus from Hertz at Heathrow and they gave him a Mercedes GLS (which wasn't ideal as he was going into the middle of Londan) - but absolutely insisted that he take the full damage waiver insurance and did it for really low price.
When we looked at the car the whole nearside was heavily scuffed from front to back.

I used Hertz about 6 years ago on holiday in Cyprus. Upon returning the car with a full tank of petrol the staff member asked for a receipt for the petrol which I did not have. Luckily they warned me that I would be charged for a full tank even though they could clearly see the tank was full.
I ended up dashing back to the petrol station and squeezing €1.50 into it just to get a receipt.
I have never used Hertz since then!
Interestingly their CEO quit recently because their US EV gamble has failed, due to a number of reasons, one of which was that they expected customers to return EVs with a full charge

If they provided banks of reserved chargers for punters to plug into and run then it would've worked great. Expecting millions of people to find a spare 20-40 minutes at a mystery, and available and working, location in a possibly foreign country shortly before you rush to your flight seems like a v poorly thought out idea.

Judging from all the above it appears this is extremely common malpractice, charge everyone by default then cancel anyone who can prove. Really awful.I ended up dashing back to the petrol station and squeezing €1.50 into it just to get a receipt.

kers.An update on this, after exchanging multiple emails with customer service and voicing my dismay, they have today emailed saying this was issued incorrectly.
Funnily enough this was initiated from the initial rental branch and they noted the Birmingham branch charged incorrectly.
Saves me the hassle with CC company and all the rest of it so glad they put this right eventually.

Hertz HURTS to B*ggery which is why every hire car we get I take a video around the whole car on collection and when returning I take a picture of the fuel & mileage. Doing this has made charge-back very simple and stopped the scams!
