At what fking point do these idiots decide that they are so fking important that they cannot help/assist/shelter the stranded drivers
Yes, your user name says it all!

They *help* by making sure that there is recovery on the way, be it a recovery company or family friend etc. Once that's done there is no further requirement (99% of the time) for them to stay.
  • Assist* They are not a breakdown service, and if they did *assist* they leave themselves open for disciplinary action, not to mention possible blame for something that goes wrong later with the drivers vehicle. No, if you want assistance, join a recovery service!
  • Shelter* from what? The weather..........they'll give out foil blankets if it's cold, plastic capes if it's raining, but my particular rant is that you should have a coat or something in your car in case it's required.
  • Shelter* from other vehicles, now you are joking!! 2 ton 4x4 v 44 ton artic, no contest!!
Yes, NorfolkInClue1 is just about right!!

Pity the H/A PR/Management team don't have the 'balls/wit' to put the 'Practice what you preach' Health and safety poster of wrecked and sideswiped H/A vehicles up in services area toilets etc for the public to concentrate on for a few minutes yikes rather than just in their own buildings.
What this one? wink

So they don't actually do anything then? Seems a bit of a waste.

As somebody who Polices the m/way, the problem is not with the HA that work on the road. Their management are the biggest bunch of risk averse idiots it has even been my misfortune to come across. The HA staff are now forbidden from moving overturned vehicles or towing cars with caravans. We often have to commandere their 4x4s. The frontline staff are as equally frustrated as we are.

Number one priority is to clear live lanes of vehicles up to appox 3 tonne (anything above is breaking H&S regs, tow strap & vehicle'capability' specs etc) anything over probably is a disciplinary (where caught, don't forget any passing recovery operator who may lose a few quid may be on the blower reporting you, it happens).

You may be right though :-).

The same could be said of paramedics, fire etc sitting around waiting for it to ' kick off'.

I was driving down M6 today and passed 2 lorry ratchet straps in live lanes several miles apart, you have to ask yourself maybe if people were a little more responsible in how they did things I.e dropping debris, running out of fuel in live lanes etc you may not ned Hato's :-)

+ 100000 ;-)

I do wonder if they should just hand it back to the BIB, but they have used the ' politics' to cut back too far, I lost count of the number of people on the phone & texting around Biminghams motorways yesterday, the BIB haven't got a grip of that yet before starting on anything else.

So, there not allowed to tow cars off the motorway.

They're not allowed to park up behind broken down cars because they cause a distraction.

They're not allowed to patrol.

They can do rolling roadblocks.

They give out blankets if your cold.

Don't think we're getting value for money.

I would think in the region of £250000 per vehicle per year.

But they are allowed as far as i know to

do lane closures for incidents
do full road closures
deal with debris,pedestrians,accidents etc
relieve the police once they have dealt with whatever they need to do
organize recovery for people that do not have it or have had an accident
attend many other incidents to support the emergency services

So just in front of them was two breakdowns. How do you know they had not dealt with them then reversed back and parked up?
Are you suggesting that they reversed back up the M6 in the wrong direction?? Nice one!!!!
Ok clever clogs answer this question.

When you stop at a vehicle how do you rejoin the carriageway once you are behind it?

Do you....

A, turn into a harrier jump jet
Or
B, reverse back down the hard shoulder to the accelerate forward and rejoin the carriageway at a suitable speed.
Lets have a response rash decision.

What do they do out of interest then?
Can they put on rolling blocks etc?
What vehicles are they driving?
(1) - Depends on which ones you get!!!! They were brought in to relieve us from things such as waiting for recovery, assisting in scene guarding road closures and bringing the tea!!!

(2) - Good question, i don't see why not they have the lights and a small message board.

(3) They use these;
They have extra cones, lights, paperwork, tape have extendable lighting on the roof and have tea urns with stuff you need at drawn out jobs!!!

Ah, nice idea... dont have anything like that round here. Our T-PCSOs have a panda, no brew kit in sight! I think this will have to go in the suggestions box!! wink
