The fact is, there is something left. But the liquid assets are far less than he was telling us and this leaves me in the situation where for me and my family to get anything I feel like I have to shaft my sister to a certain extent.
What does your sister think? If she thinks having a 30k loan scrubbed from the slate is not shafting you then I'd be a little pissed off.

At the end of the day irrespective of the legal rights and wrongs my heart is telling me I can't do what my head is telling me to do.
And that is where ONLY your sister and you can figure it out.

Legally, your sister gets no hard cash, gets £25k of her debt "wiped out", and now owes you £15k to go with you having the £10k of cash/assets he didn't get through.

You need to decide how much your relationship with your sister is worth to you.

And the moral is : assume you'll get nothing ever, from anyone's death, and then £5K will be a bonus.

I actually feel your pain. My Granddad left his 3 children the following:

My aunt: A house worth £165K (which he paid £2K for) and 1/3 of the £150K savings and shares.

My Uncle: A Low Milage Vandom Plas and 1/3 of the savings (The rub is that it was an all-agro)

My Mum: 1/3 of the savings.

Now My aunt is a star. She sent my mum and my uncle a cheque for £55K when the house was sold.

My uncle pocketed his extra £55K, and my mum sent back the £55K saying "This wasn't what my father wanted"

My aunt split the £55K between her 3 kids.

I offered my uncle £500 for the allegro (the max of my spare cash) and he scrapped it rather than let me have it.

I'm assuming that when my parents die, all the money and assets will have been spent on nursing care, and my sisters will have taken the best furniture. (Not that I have space or even like most of it)

Slightly different idea...

Since the OP is not that bothered about the money for himself he gets his sister to pay into an account, possibly at a reduced rate, until the £15K is paid off. At which point it is split between her grandkids.

Alternate, he puts the £10K cash in there too and when the sister has paid in £15K it is split between all four grandchildren.

Stops her from just 'wasting' the inheritance and removes any gain on the OPs side.
