To me it was simple- sit down shut up, ignore the utter bullst coming out of the preacher's mouth. Those were the rules of the game. As seems common from what's written here, one guy felt the need to mouth off & failed the course, so got both the course fee plus the FPN.

They're only interested in the (easy) money & it's better than doing something productive so the safest course is to just go along with their scam. The fact that it massively undermines support can be their problem to debate.
I really don't see what the problem with them is. You have to sit and be lectured in exchange for not getting points. Both options cost about the same.

As you say - they're the rules, which we know before we either decide to speed, or not pay enough attention to our speed. I'm not preaching and like to make progress myself, but I know the rules and can have no complaint if I'm caught transgressing them.

I attended a Smart Motorways Course a few years ago having been caught doing 69 in a 60 on the variable speed limit part of the M5 near Bristol.

The course was run by a couple of professional trainers who worked full time delivering training courses for business groups. They were excellent, friendly, informative and non-judgemental. Went away thinking that it was all worthwhile.

A couple of stand out things about the SAC's I have attended (3 of them) is the fact that most people have little idea of what the speed limits are on certain roads, and the fact most only drive because they have to. Very few drive because they enjoy it.

Oh and they probably don't work as I have attended 3 and can answer all the speed limit questions correctly.

The BBC, well informed laugh

Yes mistakes may well have been made in this case and maybe or maybe not a suspicion of misconduct, together with thousands of other investigations that probably went along succesfully and by the book

BBC may or may not be well informed but the Ombudsman doesn't publish something like that without being sure of the facts.

I can only tell as I find and my and several others dealings with the PSNI have been less than satisfactory.

I did my speed awareness course on Wednesday, and I have to say that I actually really enjoyed it. I went in person and there were 24 of us, and I found it beneficial. I've been driving 34 years and this was the first time I'd been caught officially(I have been caught going a bit quick in the past, but the coppers have always been really decent with me and let me off), I got caught doing 35 in a 30.

I was dreading going, but the two chaps that ran the course were really good I thought. I'm on a tight rope now as to how much longer I will keep a clean licence though in fairness! One wrong move and it will be 3 points going forward.

Yep - same scenario and I got my first points in 38 years last year.

Despite what people say, an SP30 DOES increase your premiums - about 16% on average, so if you’ve got a few high group vehicles it does mount up.

I’m very very careful now.

I'm a member of that club too. thumbup

I did my SAC last December after getting caught at 61 in a temporary 50 limit on the M40, but it's the first time I'd been caught in 47 years so it was probably overdue!

The 14 day wait starts. Pretty sure I've been done today on the a34 near Newbury from a camera van. Dual carriageway, 70mph limit. Reckon my speedo was on an indicated 85-90 when I noticed which was very close to the van.

Have a clean licence and last did a SAC in 2008. Guessing a min 3-6 points and a fine. Place your bets.

Isn't the prosecution threshold 10% + 9 if you qualify for a course? That's 86 in a 70. So if you were doing 85 or less you might be offered a course. Otherwise 3pts fpn

If you are outside the course threhshold (86) you should be offered £100 fixed penalty and 3 points if your speed estimate is correct. Ignore anything you find online that says otherwise

Been around for ages. A bit of a Knob who just posts stuff for views, talks about being able to do 57 in a 50 when 57 will see enforcement applied, also that you will prosecuted at 80 in a 70 and will get a course or a FP, so not prosecuted then.

And as we know the mythical NIP for anything less than 10% + 2 remains a myth

I've always struggled to believe this guy is actually a legal professional

Did one around 2005 and the guy was very good. Engaging, knowledgeable, and well able to shut down the 2 gobstes who thought they knew the law better than him! They didn't of course!
They are quite a money spinner though! Approximately 30 people in my group, with the same number in the room next door, so 60 x £95 = £5,700 x 5 days a week = £28,500 per week, on average! He told us he'd been fully booked for months!

I did get done at 107mph on the M62 in 2010 and that went straight to court! Cost me around a grand and 6 points but no ban! That includes a barristers 30 minutes of advice, a solicitor at court, a new suit, and the fine and costs! I paid a £500 up front, 'all in' fee. If I'd not done that, the legal stuff alone would have been £1,100! yikes

Driven like Miss Daisy since then. Less stress, less hassle, a lot cheaper, and a clean licence! smile

Got caught on the bike a bout a month ago got a letter just stating this vehicle has been spotted by a manned equiptment in excess of 60 mph on a 60 road A41

filled in the form and sent it off now have a final reminder with the same form so looks like they haven't received my letter or playing silly buggers

no mention of the speed i was clocked at yet confused
