Hi all,

Having a bit of clear out and I found 2 of my decent quality old 0.22 air rifles in the cupboard and I want to sell them.

I can't sell them on ebay as they don't allow such things, but would it be legal advertise them in the local paper/shop or something and just sell them to anyone who comes to the front door? Would I be liable for checking age of the purchaser or anything like that?

I've really no idea!

Thanks

What sort of Air Weapon is it?

You will need to check their age

On **(..SPECIFY DATE..) at **(..SPECIFY TOWNSHIP..) sold an air weapon, namely **(..SPECIFY MAKE AND TYPE OF AIR WEAPON..), to **(..SPECIFY NAME..) a person under the age of 18 years.

It's a 0.22 air rifle with telescopic sights circa 1990's.

So I just need to ask to see that they are over 18 and that's it?

I am pretty sure to sell an airweapon without a licence it needs to be rated at less than 12ft lbs, I am sure they probably are but it might be best to get them chrono'd at a local club for peace of mind?

I've done a search at work and can't find anything specific (I'm not too hot on firearms legislation) I'll have a look in my study books tomorrow, or if I bump into an ARV later I'll ask smile

yeah you need to know the power output, if it is below the aforementioned then you just need identification I think. If it is above then you need a license and so does the buyer. Could be wrong though

If you have them in a cupboard i presume you dont have a firearms cert and therefore they are under 12ft lbs , you should check age (18) and sell them face to face where possible but there is a fewe forums that have sales sections , i'm after a decent spring rifle if you want to pm or email me

an air rifle is not a firearm if it is below 12 ft/lbs, above this it is and you will need a firearms certificate.
If the rifle was bought new and hasn't been modified it won't be above 12 so just advertise normally. If it's second hand or has been modded it would be prudent to get it checked for power.
when you present the rifle to the gun shop/club show it is unloaded and not cocked.
If you carry it anywhere in public it has to be in a gun bag. You don't want armed police asking you to 'lower the weapon, sir'

When did an air powered rifle become a firearm? Firearms involve explosives such as cordite, gun cotton, gunpowder etc. do they not?

A firearms certificate covers many things, including an air weapon which produces more than the holy grail of 12 Ft/lbs.

Back when I were a lad there were several methods of "souping up" our slug guns including fitting heavier springs, "swelling" the piston rings out with PTFE tape and even machining out the transfer port between the cylinder and barrel.

Ultimately, they were still just pop-guns that would struggle to kill anything larger than a decent sized rabbit humanely.

While I had a lot of fun with them, I grew up in the country surrounded by farmers with shotguns and proper rifles who taught me how to handle weapons safely, how to shoot accurately and, most importantly, what to shoot at.
I don't see any place for them in towns in the hands of little bds who think nothing of taking a shot at cats, cars or cops, but I would be loathe to ban them completely as I think they still have a role in vermin control.

Our country's gun laws are rediculous. Forget about self protection etc. I think of it this way.

You can kill a Dracula with an old bit of wood, everybody's got an old bit of wood, you can outrun Frankenstein because his size & boots don't do him any favours, the same goes for the ancient mummys, but werewolves are a different kettle of fish. It takes a silver bullet to kill a werewolf which in its self is not a problem, unless of course you live in a country that's banned firearms.

I think this country is asking to be taken over by werewolves.

ETA for the pedants.. Yes I know Draclia was a vampire, & yes I know Frankenstein was the monster's creator.

Actually, I think you'll find that both Frankenstein and the monster were created by Mary Shelley...

I knew someone would say that & of course literally speaking you are correct, however, apparently the original idea maybe was not her own, & no I'm not going looking for a link. smile
