How much faster than the designated limit do people have to be going (is there a set speed?) to earn themselves an instant ban for speeding? The same question for jail time, and the same question again for points. I assume for points its 'strictly' limit+10% as a minimum? Has anyone got points for doing less than limit+10%?

Forgive me for being too lazy to search the forums (was born lazy ) - IIRC if you are caught traveling more than 15mph above the limit (in some areas!) you now earn youself 6 points, and that this 'new law' is being trialed in parts of the UK. Is this correct, and is this law going to be introduced nationwide? Any comments on this move?

One more question - for the bib who post OR lurk here on PH re: Members of the public who approach/email you for advice, or those whom you speak to online, what obligation do you have to act upon criminal information gleaned through your being here, ie emails from /or/ videos of PHers either admitting to or reflecting upon (or asking for advice) having committed an offence ie speeding or dangerous driving etc?

The Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) many years ago put their heads togfether and came up with a speed enforcement policy so, to a degree, all who offend, should be treated the same. Prosecution of exceeding the limits start at ten percent plus 2. There is then an area of speed that will attract a Conditional Offer (providing absence of points will allow without totting) ie. 3 points/60 fine. They deem the higher the speed the more danger so again at a cut out point a CO will not be offered but a summons issued for a court appearance and the posibility of ban, higher fine and /or more points.

Example: 30 mph 35-50 CO 51 Court
70 mph 79-96 CO 97 Court.

On the second point, under the Road Safety Bill 2004 that was going through Parliament, graduated punishment were proposed for speeding i.e. Low Penalty - 2 points/ 40 fine, Standard - 3/60 and Higher - 6 points/ 100 pounds.

Example 30mph up to 39 Low, 40 - 44 Standard, 45 - High
70mph up to 83 Low. 84 -93 Standard, 94 -high.

But, due to the Election, the Road Safety Bill has run out of time in relatiuon to the procedure for it to become law and has been shelved.

I thought the (ACPO?) guidelines suggest the enforcement threshold should be set at 10% plus 2mph above the posted limit. However, this is only a guideline.
There was a recent thread around here a friend of a PHer was done for 32 in a 30. A plod PHer once said he set his trigger thrshold at 52 in a 40.

I always use my GPS speedo for this reason.
