Last night I came upon a queue of traffic behind a Panda car (LPG Focus) doing just over 70 mph. I drifted past at 77 mph, looked over and nodded to copper. They then accelerated and sat on my tail (close enough for me to not be able to see the headlights!) for a bit then pulled me over. At no point was I over 77mph according to my GPS.

Copper said they were doing 80 and I overtook them so I must have been doing 80 plus. They got a bit stroppy when I questioned the accuracy
of their speedo... I thought to ask why they were doing '80' but bit my tongue, I didn't want to talk myself into a ticket.

Anyway, after a bit of a chat (speeding sermon) and check of details I was let on my way. I appreciate the discretion because I guess they could have booked me for any speed they chose but what a waste of time pulling my over in the first place and another minus for my perception of the police...

They were no doubt showing the rest of the traffic behind what happens to people who have the "cheek" to step out of line and overtake them.

They prefer to keep people afraid and in a line behind them.

The same thing has happened to me.

Certainly true in my force. Only area cars and RPU vehilces should do stops on a motorway, unless it is life and death and there is no suitable vehilce which can do it. Pandas are not equipped with the appropriate lighting and nor are the drivers trained to do stops on a motorway.

At the end of the day, you went past them exceeding the speed limit.. so why are you surprised you got pulled over? You were effectively challenging their authority in the same way as someone is, say throwing litter right in front of a copper.

I bet they knew from the off they couldn't stick one on you for it, but just decided to waste a bit of your time to teach you a lesson

Flying into work this morning, I slowed down for a Panda ML: I figured a gentle 80mph amble past would be fine and dandy.

No sooner had I shuffled by (the few other cars creeping ridiculously behind at bang on 70, in excess hommage and presumable rozzer ego-worship) than il polizi had immediately accelerated past me, pulled right back in and then quickly dabbed on his anchors, presumably as demonstration of our respective places in the scheme of things.

Fair enough but disappointingly petty...

...I hope this chap's shift has now finished because right now, at the end of this particularly gruelling one for me, the immediate intention is to embark upon a new land speed record for provincial annexation.

Marvellous.

Bet he couldn't have done you even if he wanted to. Panda with a calibrated speedo, hardly likely.

Well quite: after all, why not pick on errant ticks of the cappus baseballium when you can luxuriate around all day in a souped up, luxo-performance 4x4?

Oft discussed, all he has to do is make a check before end of shift.
Pick up chronometer and observer if single crewed, drive at appropriate and steady speeds along the measured mile / half mile hopefully provided courstesy county surveyor.
Appropriate notes of speed snd timing made in pocket books.
If timing reveals speedo inaccuracy, no further action, otherwise? Robert is your father's brother.
