Fill in the NIP with his details and you have complied with the law. What they do then is up to them.

Don't be surprised if they then ask you to provide evidence that he was here and insured to drive your car. You do not have to do this, but it will make them go away quicker if you can.

You should be fine.

The Truvelo picture will show who the real driver was as it's taken from the front, so just fill in your mate's name and address and let the police get back to you.

If push comes to shove, the photograph will be your get out - won't it?

With regards to the latter, I believe a simple "I asked him if he was insured and he said he was" will suffice.

Not exactly, you can still be done fpor 'permitting'. You should see the other drivers insurance cover before letting them drive, and, bear in mind, the UK is one of the few countries where it is the driver/car combo that is insured, in most countries, the USA included, it is the CAR that is insured, not the driver, therefore if you let a foreigner drive your car you should make sure that YOUR insurance covers them.
