I was out on saturday, and throughout the course of the evening no less than 4 seperate drink driving offences were committed by the people I thought i knew, with each one being explicitely told, thats fucking stupid, you know whats going to happen and having the consequences spelt out to them before they did it. One of them wasnt even insured to drive the car they did under normal circumstances.

Needless to say I wasnt in any of these cars.
It wasnt even by a small margin, it was serious people who could barely stand up. All of them in respectable jobs in society.

All of these offences were commited within or close to town centres on saturday night with a police station within half a mile. One of the offences consisted of a round trip totalling about 50 miles. None of them were caught.

I used to know these people when I was younger! what the hell happened there eh..

I'm certainly not going to give you any of the "No-one died, so it's OK" tosh. If Chris has reported his observations accurately it is indeed a serious matter.

As I have previously said, I do not go along with the idea that drinking and driving should not be mixed at all but it is definitely something to be very careful about.

This may seem rather far fetched and I won't press the point, but I wonder if it is an illustration of more people rebelling against authority, perhaps the way I do with regard to the NSL. Also, if drinking is becoming more of a problem generally - not just with drivers - does it indicate that more people are seeking some form of escape from their frustrations with some elements of the modern world? I don't know, it's just a thought.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

It's good to see that, at least within the PH community, there is an element of self-policing. We all love driving - that's why we're all here chatting, and it is heartening to believe that most of us are aware of the true dangers of driving as well as the delights. i hope you pointed out to these guys in no uncertain terms that their actions were well out of order!

If we cannot self-regulate, then Blair and the anti-car lobby will make policy for us - and it will continue to threaten our pleasurable driving activities.

All were thoroughly told. Their response was basically crap 'you sound like my parents' - clearly its uncool to try and save your friends and other people from a miserable fate one way or the other.
