Whilst out driving yesterday I took a bent at around 15mph as I accelerated out of the bend the back end came out slightly (20mph roughly 10 degrees). I then continue on with my journey as per usual pull up at a friend’s house and have the police pull up.

They tell me a traffic cop saw what I did (has it on camera) and asked for them to pull me. Anyway at first I thought I was doing ok and would get away with a producer but then they decide to caution me for reckless driving. I have been down my local station and shown all my documents which are fine. The police said they would get in touch and let me know if they intend to pursue the incident; they are compiling a report which they will put forward and see if they intend to proceed.

Now I don't believe they have this on camera as the traffic cop says he was two cars behind on the crossroads (near bend in question). I also believe the police car may have been on steep incline and not able to film anything but clear blue sky. I asked the police to show me the tape which they did not, he advised that they were not obliged to until shown in court for evidence. Surely this is needed should I be required to build a defense.

The traffic cop also pulled up gave me a telling off, but did not show me and said he was a couple of cars behind. He said he was surprised I kept control. (I just kept quiet when he said this)

I've only put around 20 miles since owning the car and already I’m in trouble.

I have been driving for 6 years and have a clean license and have never been in trouble with the police.

I have not admitted anything and did say that I have just bought the car. They asked if I lost control of the car at any point and I said no.

Can't blame them as they were only doing there job but I'm sure they could have been doing more meaningful work instead of wasting one and half hours with me.

The traffic cop was the only policeman in his car as he was driving a victim of a crime somewhere. I told the policeman that I would not drive in such away in my car (BEC seven) and that I had read on fatalities in recent months in similar cars.

I did at the time say that I would like to see this tape as I know I did not do anything. I drove well within the speed limit and was polite and cooperated 100%.

This is my first run in with the police and what is the typical out come of such an offense do I have any defense?

Do they need to inform me within a certain timeframe?

I take it that either the road was icy or oily, or otherwise lacking in grip. Or maybe the speedo on your new Caterham is under-reading - Streaky

Definitely not icy but it's all coming back to me now, its all clear now yes. It was oily

Would it be an idea to get some pictures of the road with those hazardous oil patches?

Whilst the car was making a ratchet, I was only doing 20. The tyres are not very good (perfectly legal mind).

By this officer's reckoning, anybody who locks the front wheels while stopping is similarly driving recklessly.

Unless there is rather more to it than so far revealed, it all sounds to be a lot of fuss about nothing IMHO.

I suppose a car that sounds unusually noisy also tends to make these things appear worse than they really are.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

If you'd been in a Mondeo they would have left you alone. Some cars are a magnet for plod. Envy.
