I'm fairly new to the country, so am still working out some of the more arcane motoring doolallies I now have to avoid. (Oh for the days of snow and switchbacks.)

I've heard a lot of people talk about supposed cameras up on the gantries along the M25, but as often as I drive it, I've never seen them, seen cars slow for them, or seen the tell-tale flash as they go off. Now, I know there are plenty of cameras along that Heathrow section, but I can only spot Gatsos at the side of the road, well marked, obvious, and within the roadwork areas.

So I figure you guys are the most likely to know if these gantry scameras exist, and if so, why do they never appear to go off? As soon as the roadwork restrictions end, I'm back up to 80 but I've not got a letter telling me it's illegal. Or have I just been lucky?

The gantry cameras only work when there is a temporary limit displayed on the gantry. Observation suggests that they are triggered at > +10 over the posted limit.

Watch out for the 60-50-60 combination on three successive gantries around the A30 clockwise (where the gantries are closer together.

Not all the gantries have cameras ... the regular drivers know which they are and their speed reflects this.

Often (but not always) the gantries on the M25 have camera's on both sides of the carriageway. That way if you see cameras on the opposite carriageway, often there will be some on your own.

I regularly travel from J21 to J7 late at night & have not got a telling off for travelling between 0.8 & 0.9 units (with the exception of Heathrow roadworks & other temp limits).
