Police Forces to merge - Good or Bad idea?
Discussion
I for one think it would be a good idea to reduce the number of forces to around 12.
From what i have seen, theres too much red tape restricting the way the job is done, with different types of equipment, individual force area boundarys, the different ways that crimes are investigated and the way that both process and prisoners are subsequently dealt with.
On the downside, a number of Chief Constables and 'other' high ranking Officers would have to move or lose their jobs but im not sure that this would be a bad thing
What do you think?

I think it will be a fine time for the politicos to remove the CCs they don't like (Durham anyone...).
I have reservations in that control centres might not understand the geography/dynamics of areas they are taking calls from (this is already creating problems for the fire service IIRC).

If it's going to get rid of wasteful burocracy and burocrats then it's good BUT
I have reservations about centralised responses especially for the people "out in the sticks" AND
I don't like the idea of central government getting more "control" over the police which this move will inevitably do...
The "service" is supposed to be divorced from govmint isn't it (CC and all that being appointed by police boards)???? This makes more chances of the socio-fascists in govmint using the service for their own blatantly hypocritical ends.......

depends who gets the job, can you imagine if someone with an impecable record held sway over such a large police force? someone like Brunstrom for instance?
jesus that thought nearly brought on a panic attack

To be fair though Pete, they are all puppets and only say what their advisors advise.
This is self evident in the fact that they all bring out books when retired contradicting what they said when they were in office.
Really? I didn't know that. So who pulls the strings for CC Brunstrom? I was under the impression he was a bit of a loose cannon
As usual it's hard to know who to believe. Those in favour say that having larger forces will make it easier to provide "bobbies on the beat" because they won't have to keep dragging them away to handle triple murder cases. Those against say that a larger force will lose the personal touch that keeps them close to their local residents.
As a Warwickshire resident I have to say that I don't notice the personal touch, and I live 1/4 mile from the Warwickshire HQ. I presume that would close and a new HQ be built somewhere else, as I'm sure no building currently owned by the police would be big enough to house them all (£££.
I work for a company where we build virtual teams across lines of business to staff projects. It's normal to have teleconferences instead of face-to-face meetings. Why do we need a reorganisation to achieve teamwork by the police? Why can't we just expect them to cooperate to get the wider job done, the same way that companies do? It would be an awful lot cheaper.

The jury is still out for me im afraid. As the situation is still being discussed no one has told us how it will benifit us as the police and you as the public.
All we have been told is there are 3 plans for my force which is one of the larger forces in the country.
1) Stay as we are as we technically are a strategic force in terms of size.
2) Merge with 1 or 2 smaller forces.
3) create a new south east force with 2 large police forces.
I cant see it making a blind bit of difference at ground level. Will help with streamlines procedures and information between forces which are merged.
But in reality to get each force to the same level of technology will take bloomin years.
The only thing i can think of is the buying power of 1 large force compared to 3 smaller forces when it comes to kit.

It will all end in tears....
I have been through two amalgamations after initially joining a relatively small efficient County Force.
Big is NOT beautiful far from it - impersonality creeps in as does indifference. Little or no allegience to the area. Big white chiefs in Ivory Towers out of touch with the ground troops who ARE THE POLICE SERVICE. Which is why certain nortern forces have rejected proposal.
Mutal Aid arrangements and MACP from Military can cope with what Clarke claims.
Glad I am out.
Scenario to watch:
This will go ahead. Same time massive influx of plasic cops (CSO/HA etc).
Five years time, call for ONE NATIONAL POLICE FORCE.
Trained police, severely depleted into a FBI along with SOCA - CSO 's (at cheap rate) etc to police the sticks and local community. May even get a Sheriff of West Yorkshire
(interested fif?).
