Quality awards are rubbish.

I remember years back the place I was then working considered BS5750 status. It was apparent that this was all about filling in bits of paper to tick boxes, and nothing to do with the actual quality of the work or product.

Arguably this would drop as instead of fixing a problem and documenting the fix, you'd have to fill in half a dozen forms explaining what you were doing in terms suitable for a monkey to understand.

Its not PNC, if you go to pay your road tax online and put in the make / model of vehicle into the system and plate number, it will tell you the expiry dates of your tax etc.

Data protection act is not contraviened as no personal data has been released.

I forget exactly quite which quality standard it was, but there
was one which said it didn't matter how stupid or inefficient
your computer software development process was, as long as you
documented it, and stuck to the documentation, then you got
the quality standard.

Which was excellent job security for all the paper pushers,
and a nightmare for anyone trying to improve the process.

I am reminded of the playing card sorting procedure which
is to throw the cars on the floor repeatedly, until they
all land in sorted order. This normally takes quite some
time.

The ISO/IEC 9000 series fall into this category. The product can be total trash, provided the process is documentsed and followed to the letter. But many are like that, so-called "standards" that are merely guidelines. There is one where you can get a BSI certificate even if all you say is that you intend (and have a project) to implement the controls required but don't actually have any at the time of inspection.

And remember, the Titanic was built to Board of Trade standards.

BS5750 is now ISO9000 et al. It means that if your manual says you make crap then as long as you continue to make crap and document that fact, you're okay. Make anything properly by accident and you're in the cack. It is a bureaucratic nightmare and a waste of time.

Streaky, at least we agree on this!
