Sent off my tax V whateveritis along with insurance cert, MOT and cheque. Thought it was pushing it sending it 15/12 (albeit I only received it the day before) with the xmas interlude. However, it got returned yesterday telling me the insurance document was incorrect. When I checked, I noticed it had my old numberplate (prior to transfer of my private plate). I called the insurers straight away to make the amendment and now a new certificate is in the post and will be with me in 3 - 4 days (we'll see with new year in between....)

So whats the score these days? I assume its illegal to drive the car after the 31st? Can I send off the V whatever after the 31st still to the local DVLA office with all the correct documents once received? When does the fine kick in for not declaring SORN?

I'm not sure about the timeframes an nat but have you tried using the online application for Road Tax? Might be a quicker way to register when you do get the insurance etc confirmed and that way the motor is taxed even if you haven't got the disc (mine arrived within 3 days of paying online). Just a thought.

if you need the car, why not do it the good, old fashioned way...just wander down the post office with your docs, hand over your dosh, and walk out with a tax disc!....no need to worry about the roayl mail then.

because
1. I dont have the certificate with theh correct reg yet
2. I cant be arsed to spend 20 minutes driving to a post office.
3. I cant be arsed to queue for 30 mins in the post office.
4. Post offices smell of old, poor, and scummy people.
5. If I tax it after the 31st, does it matter whether I am 2 days late or 10? Will I get fined?

Thats a good idea. Assume the website is found via the DVLA site?

You can apply online:

if you have received a Vehicle Licence Application/SORN Declaration form (V11) with a unique 16 digit reference number printed in the yellow box on the front of the form or
if you have not received a V11 and your vehicle does not require an MOT, you can use the 11 digit reference number found on the front of your Vehicle Registration Certificate (V5C) or Vehicle Registration Document (V5) or
if your vehicle has been issued with a new style computerised MOT receipt (certificate), Goods Vehicle (GVT) or Passenger Service Vehicle (PSV) test certificate, you can use the 11 digit reference number on the front of your V5C or V5

no numbers in the yellow box. MOT is old style...

Sorry I didn't know what qualified you to apply on-line, worth a try tho.

Good luck anyway with sorting it

Its not using the vehicle without a Licence for the first few days as DVLA are not really interested if say within the first week - 10 days you renew on a continuation.

Its the Jobsworthy that may stick a Fixed Penalty Notice on your motor for failing to display a current Licence as a result that short wait at the Post Office may pay dividends......

Yes but because of the above you won't legally be able to drive your vehicle or park it on any public road until the post catches up and returns your disc. Now with the mail being the way it is this time of year you could end up waiting longer than expected.

Taxed my race van today and from walking into the post office it took all of ten minutes. Can't see the problem really

I taxed mine a couple of days late, basically because I forgot. My fault, I know. I called up the DVLA and asked what the situation was re. fines for late tax and was told that you still get 14 days before they fine you.

Not sure what the big deal is about going to the post office to get your tax is though, apart from your missing document obviously, because in 15 years of car ownership, I have never renewed car tax by post. Surely it's better to get it out of the way seeing as you only have to do it once a year. You'd probably spend more time queuing in shops over the next 12 months.
