After the fine, is she any wiser as to the danger of stopping where she did?

There are always calls on the forum for cameras and civil operators to be replaced by good old fashioned traffic policemen who can use their discretion. This one did.
I always told my kids and anybody else that if they were in trouble go and speak to a policeman as they would always be helpful. That was in the past now I tell them to avoid the police unless they have to talk to them.

also, on a similar vein, why on earth do people travel to an unfamiliar city (ie London) without a map?? Delivery drivers to it too. 'Excuse me mate, ive just come from Dorset can you tell me how to get to ............?' reply 'go to the next petrol station and buy a bloody map' There should be an FPN code for 'being a prat in charge of a motor vehicle'

Thats a point - why do people pull up BEHIND you when you've got the reds on - then obsure your reds from oncoming motorists? What is that all about??

In case the BiB pull out in to you as you park? Unlikely to happen, but the perception will be in the head.

she's definately playing on the "damsel in distress" bit, she was on telly this morning, and the gmtv blokey didn't know you weren't allowed to stop either. they also had a rather attractive representative from the plod on who was a DC (detective constable?), and basically said the copper was wrong in what he did, and should have used his discretion.
i'd have thought the traffic cop would have had more experience in scraping idiots off the motorway than your average DC, and was better placed to use his discretion.

It must be fantastic to never have to ask for directions, ever.

Woooahhhh - there's a difference between setting off only knowing how to get to a town and having flimsy directions given by a woman which you can't understand.

I got asked for directions to a pub the other day by 4 louts in a car. All they had was the pub name and the town!

I think giving her the fine was a good idea if your only interested in road safety.

Many people dont know how dangerous it is to stop on the hard shoulder, this is a great way to get the message out.

But that said it hardly does the police any favors in the PR department, they are allready viewed by many as unhelpfull and only interested in petty offences.

Just out of intererest is a £30 fine the minimum punishment that the police can give you?

I don't see this as doing any harm to the police PR. If they had their reds on then they may have been clearing the motorway of debris, warning motorists of danger ahead or many other reasons. A motorist obscuring flashing reds may not only have put their own life in danger but also those of the police and other motorists. £30 fine is a small price to pay for such stupidity.

well done those BiB

I don't disagree with her getting a fine for stopping on the hard shoulder. It was a silly thing to do and she deserved to be punished, even if only as a warning to herself and others not to do it.

However, as regards the signing. If she was around the M6/M6-toll junction I'm not surprised she was confused. It almost seems deliberate that the signs are confusing to get people onto the toll road. And some of the signs on the roundabouts approaching the motorways are even worse. Yes, get a better map, get satnav, get something, but I do think we should be able to trust the signs.

I always plan a journey to make sure that at the very least, I know where to head towards if I get lost. I do this even though I have SatNav and know a lot of the UK motorways like the back of my hand anyway.

It never fails to piss me off the amount of people who just stop anywhere or read maps while negotiating a roundabout etc! Let alone stop on the hard shoulder of a motorway for that reason

Maybe she should get together with the man that is sueing the local council for soliling his trousers since the toilet was shut - they would make a lovely couple with all that common sense between them...
