Speed wardens coming to your local town
Discussion
A report on the BBC local news yesterday in the south, as from today local speed wardens will be operating in Lymington, Stockbrigde. They will stand near flashing speed signs, so when trigered by a car travelling over the posted limit, these warden will write down the car reg numder, colour and make. Then this information will be passed on to the police and you will receive a warning letter. So the under funded, under manned police will suddenly find time to write warning letters,
I have two questions, 1. If I write by to the police force saying bollox what trouble will I get into and secondly If I stop at the roadside having seen somebody write down my reg numder and I go over to them ask to see the information and say grab the sheet of paper and walk away with it, what could they do.

First of all the VAS signs are not oficially calibrated.
Secondly, the letters have no substance in law.
Thirdly, it would be best to engage in a long letter-writing saga with the Old Bill if you receive any correspondance such as this requesting details of calibration/accuracy, where this fits into legal process in statute, etc. If enough people do this it will eat up so much time they'll give up.
Alternatively, you could send the letter back suggesting they form it into a cone shape, starch it and stick it where the sun doesn't shine!
It might be fun to try to get 'Fastest Time if the Day' through the signs. Stop and ask if you are the fastest and if not tell them you are going back for another run - Must try harder!

Some would appear not to have been calibrated at all... Also, if one vehicle sets the sign flashing, but a second vehicle then drives by - at a sightly lower speed which wouldn't have tripped the sign - before the sign has timed-out, are they going to note down both vehicle details and end up pissing off two motorists for the price of one? Utterly ludicrous idea, guaranteed to reduce respect for VAS's and the police, and possibly even leading to some heated confrontations at the roadside.

I think we miss the point here...
I think the motive of this is to see that X thousand people had broken the speed limit in a week period and thus there will be local support for a real speed camera.
I hope I am proved wrong, but i think not...
Then whats the point of them putting the flashing signs up in the first place?

As previously pointed out, there’s no way any speeding driver should expect anymore than warning letters, regardless of rate of offence.
The SCPs are trying to drum up support any way they can; clearly they are getting desperate.
Divide and rule?

I was amazed to learn these flashing signs don't have a "counter" in them to record how many times they are set off, surely that would have been a more sensible way of finding out if there is a problem or not?

Because they couldnt prove that there was enough of a problem to legally warrant a Gatso.
As turbobloke says, if the flahing sign had a counter in it then there would be proof that 30% or more of the drivers could go through the sign at 40 instead of the newly imposed 30 without a single accident and thus the speed limit which should be set by the 85 percentile of speed should be increased.
If they dont do this, and only cherrypick results to find a list of 'lawbreakers' it just reinforces the pro-speed camera lobby.
Guess which is going on here...!

TB - do you think there should be limits set at 34mph, for example?
