I was pulled over on Saturday, for the first time, yet have been driving for at least 10 years.
I hadn't got my Driving License or anything else with me for identification and was given this "producer".

Can someone tell me what this is and what they do with it?

Basically, it states on it:
Reason for stop: G53, FPN, VEL, Check, Offence, Accident. The Policeman selected Check.
Then there are 2 further sections titled: Check only & Record details. He ticked the box for DL and Insurance in the "Check Only" section.

I have the docs at home and will happily take them in, but what do they do with them when I go in? Never been pulled over before let alone been into a Police station! I am a bit apprehensive about it and wondered what i should expect when i go in?

Sorry to be niave, but am being a typical worrying woman here!!

Don't panic.

They ticked the ckeck only box, so all they want to see is documentary evidence that you have a valid driving licence, and a certificate of insurance.

Copper obviously thought that you looked dodgy originally

Take them in to the nick, show them, and then be on your way...

Thanks for your reply Chris!
About a year ago, I had my bag stolen which had my passport, driving licence and credit cards in, since then I hardly carry anything round with me. So am kicking myself that I didnt even have my Driving licence on me, as he only gave me this producer, when I couldnt show him any photo ID!

So I take it I just need to walk in, wave these docs under their nose and it'll be panic over for me? PHEW!

Hi Susan

Yep, it's a doddle. I regularly had to produce my documents at police stations many moons ago when I was in my youth!

All they will do is check over your documents, pretty much the police officer would have done when he stopped you had you had your documents with you then.

Nothing to worry about imo.

Absolutely nothing to worry about (unless your DL and Insurance are not in order) so visit Plodshop before 7 days have elapsed since the stop.

With all these records now on computor I thought producing was becoming a thing of the past or are records not as good as made out?????

(Ok BiB maybe he didn't have a car radio....)

Thanks everyone.
As far as i know it's all in order, not disqalified from driving or anything and I looked at my Insurance cert this AM, and it runs out in Sept 06.

The only thing is that my DL is in my maiden name, but have got marriage cert I can take in to prove that's me.. Just something I havent got round to changing yet!

So what do they do, just look at them, as they would if I had got them on me when pulled over?
What a parlava eh!?!

We just look at them to make sure they are in order. That is it. They will not be recorded on the Hort2 register because that takes time and the request was just to check them.
If you look on the form there is a box for record details! The front copy of the form will be sent to the officer who stopped you to let him/her know that the documents you produced are in order. That is what will be written on the form. The carbon copy of the form stays in the book. The books are numbered as are each entry put into it. This is helpful if someone else has an enquiry about your docs. It can also help if you ever need an alibi I was at the nick producing documents on that date at that time. You can check, its written in an Hort2 book!

mg6b, in the near future when all insurance and MoT and driver / vehicle details are on a computer database, won't the infamous 'producer' will be a thing of the past? BiB will have to use vehicle checks to inspect 'interesting bodywork'

No.

Vehicles recently purchased and being driven on traders insurance do not have to be notified to the insurance company covering the trade policy for 14 days.

There will be other reasons for issuing producers as well such as the need to examine the licence paper part to find out the number of points and what the convictions were for as this is not recorded on the data base at the moment as far as I am aware. Especially if the driver is only in possession of the photo card details or there is some question as to the authenticity of the documentation itself even though the records may show the driver to be covered.

Agreed. My light-hearted post had more to do with bromide solution than carbon paper

It's safer not to carry it around in case you lose it... Producers are very routine and your licence is safer at home. If you lose it and then get a producer you'll be in the doo doo even if Swansea know about it.
