Today is 27 03 12. It will continue to be 27 03 12 until the stroke of midnight. No Google or lawyering required: apply first principles.
Thats what I figured but I don't trust the sneaky sods to grab the opportunity for an easy £60fixed penalty... But anyway from what people mentioned here, what I googled, and COMMON SENSE! I drove it anyway trackdemon said:

i.e. as soon as it's 27 03 12 it's expired, you're done for.
If theyd have meant end of 27 03 12 wouldnt they have said it.
Where does google say it's midnight at the end of the expiry date?
Willing to accept argument to the contrary
For instance on the tax reminder form it says your tax 'runs out on 31st March 2012'
If you buy a new disc it starts on 1st April
so 'on' more than likely means 'end of' for tax

In the law, a day means a day, absent express provision to the contrary. Common sense and the law are more often related than people suppose.

Every day lasts 24 hours (avoiding science-geek hair splitting over precise measurements). The MOT expired on the day which we call 27/03/12. That day lasted 24 hours and ended at midnight, when the date became 28/03/13. At that point, the MOT turned into a pumpkin.

In previous threads the law has usefully been a tad more pedantic than that In the law, a day means a day, absent express provision to the contrary. Common sense and the law are more often related than people suppose.
Hence why I wote that if it says it expires on the 27th, you'd expect that as soon as it's the 27th it's expired.
However as I also wrote the tax disc form treats 'on' as 'end of' so I dont see why the MOT should be any different.
Thanks for your kind support
This is an example of the law being what some would call pedantic but what I would call being careful, and demanding full value from words and phrases. The law says - a day is a day! If you mean a day to be something other than a day, you must say so. The MOT cert does not say so, so the car can bask in lawful and pristine splendour for every last second of the day, before magically transforming itself into a lethal and knackered heap as the chimes ring out.
