Psuedo German number plates
Discussion
In the past week I've seen 4 separate cars; VW, Audi and 2 BMWs with pseudo German plates, i.e. pressed steel, white background, font as used in Germany and with a "D" where the country of registration goes. These have all been with a UK registration number.
Obviously these are illegal in all respects, but I thought especially claiming the vehicle is registered in a different country from what it actually is, is a real bad thing. Oh and the owners that do this what are they thinking of?

So what.
If they speed as well, they still might get pulled or photographed!
Locally we have a illegally spaced plate parks on the side of the A591 into Windermere - every police vehicle passes it, and nobody bothers, and why would they?
Everybody can read it.

As said above - it's a certain "type" of driver who has these stupid, unappealing plates on their car. You know the type....
Not legal and an easy pull for the police. As has been said many times an easy pull can often lead to much bigger things, so surprised they haven't been.
Oh and obviously the display of the "D" on the plate is also illegal.
I also wonder if maybe they "think" they might get away with the odd speeding ticket etc. When the pictures are checked many foreign plates are simply disgarded - UK don't bother chasing fines from outside the country.
So a quick glance will show a metal German plate with the "D" mark in a stupid looking font - possible it would be disgarded as a quick glance may indicate it is foreign.

There are lots of things that people do to their car that irk me, but the faux-German plates really don't. In fact, I quite like the look of them, and it's not as though they are any less easy to read.
Now the ones where someone has bastardised the spacing, tactically positioned the retaining screws and/or used an odd font to make it loosely resemble their name... They deserve all the abuse they get. But zee German vuns, zey ist harmless, ja?

I have 100% legal pressed steel number plates on my car, no 'D' just a Euro stars circle with a saltire underneath, let the judgemental amongst you proceed...
in the german font ? or (depending on age of vehicle ) the appproved UK font / one of the classic UK fonts ?

Do tell... I remember back in the day there was a group buy on one of the BMW forums. I of course bought a set, it was the fashion at the time (along with retrofitted angel eyes) on the E36.
Tbh, there are far, far worse modifications out there.

You would be very surprised what ANPR can read without difficulty.I got pulled once by a traffic officer whilst I was on my bike one day, which had a tiny, single line 'letterbox' number plate on it. It was really quite small.
I asked if he pulled me because of the plate and he said no, the ANPR read it fine even from a distance, and he therefore wasn't bothered about it, but he pulled me to check my MOT as it came up as expired. I had it MOT'd that morning before I went out for a ride, and he was happy with that, and off we went.
My girlfriends Audi Coupe had a set of Polish pressed metal plates on it for a little while, complete with proper 'Audi Krakow' plastic dealer surrounds, but in the correct layout of letters K823 MSL.
That REALLY confused one officer in particular. He was almost insistent it was a foreign car because of the plates, despite it being RHD and displaying a tax disk with the reg on.
I have all legal plates these days because I'm now a model citizen.
Also, speaking of Polish plates, I've spotted a new trick recently by the local Poles:
Buy an English car, usually Audi A4 or similar, then simply remove the UK plates and tax disc any fit any old set of Polish plates.
And bingo, no need to ever pay for a tax disc, insurance, MOT, or parking tickets ever again.

The fact they're Polish plates is irrelevant. The same applies to any car with false/cloned plates on. It's just that those are easier to spot...Buy an English car, usually Audi A4 or similar, then simply remove the UK plates and tax disc any fit any old set of Polish plates.

Easier to spot, yes, but much much harder to get to the bottom of unless our officers have access to the Polish DVLA.
