New car - swapping plate from old one...
Discussion
P'Xing my car for another one from a dealer, I want to retain my private plate and eventually put it on the new car.
The V317 states "You must not sell or get rid of the vehicle until you
receive a replacement V5C. If you do sell or get rid
of the vehicle before you get a replacement V5C,
the new keeper is entitled to keep the vehicle
registration number if they want to."
Now, due to the timescale of getting the plate on a retention certificate and the paperwork back from the DVLA, it's not going to be possible - am I going to be shafted by the dealer and lose my plate, or can I get them to put something in writing stating they appreciate the paperwork is in progress and the plate is not included with the car?

Strictly true - however when I part exchanged in October the MINI dealer kindly held onto my old car until I received the V5 with the new reg number (i.e. not my retained number) on it - which took precisely 5 days from posting the retention form... so you can probably make this work with a bit of consideration from the dealer...

That's encouraging - form might be back in time at that rate. I was expecting it to be two weeks or more.Cheers.

When I worked at a MINI dealer we used to get an absolute roasting from management if we took a car in that had a private plate awaiting transfer as the dealer can do absolutely nothing with the car until the plate is swapped.
I can imagine. Part of me wants to believe the dealer will be helpful, but part of me knows they'll say whatever you want to hear to get the sale.timbo999 said:
Interesting... there didn't seem to be any resistance from mine... however the car I part ex'd was already 'underwritten' (i.e. sold to) a trader so maybe that makes it easier...
That's the case with mine. Too old for the main dealer to be interested in, so they punt it out to whoever bids highest I guess.solo2 said:
Some dealers will be helpful, others won't. I'm always amazed at people who suddenly decide to buy a car and this becomes an issue, I've always know weeks/months in advance I'm going to change my car and do it then.
This was a somewhat spur of the moment thing and I was happy to find a car in the spec I wanted, so the deal was done over the phone in a couple of hours. Pick up arranged for eight days later. I sent the V317 form off the next day, Special Delivery, so here's hoping the DVLA come up trumps.Sideways Tim said:

Last time I did this (a BMW dealer) they took a £500 deposit against the V5 until it came back with the new number. Was no issue at all.
This is what we do. We'll help with all the paperwork so we know it's done. Once you give us the V5 we'll give you the £500 back.Anyway, retention of numbers went live on line today. £80 for a ten year retention certificate.
