Just bought a new (old) car. Taxing at the end of the month?
Discussion
Hi all.
Finally got myself a new car, Mk1 mx5
How does the online tax work - am I right in thinking I will have to pay for a full month only to have a couple of days out of it?
The previous owner did 'leave it taxed' but has now cancelled it. It won't break the bank but money saved means more car parts! Anyone else tackled this?

Guys - You are not going to believe this.
So, as by recommendation on this forum, and I thought clearly the right thing to do would be SORN the car, so I did.
As it's the first of the month today - I now want to buy my tax.
My V5 cert arrived yesterday, too.
So I go down the option of - Use your V5 document ref number etc...
and I get this:
"Successful application already completed
This vehicle has been taxed or notified as off the road within the last 5 days.
If you have recently purchased the vehicle this could have been done by the previous keeper. You still need to tax. Use the new keeper supplement V5C/2 to apply again online. If unable to do so, please tax at a Post Office.
If you have a V5C registration certificate (log book) that's in your name you can check the vehicle status online. Please note the online checking service does not update immediately, continue to check this service over the next 5 days.
If you have notified the vehicle as off the road in error and need to drive it immediately read the following link for more information on how to tax after SORN"
Brilliant.
I now go back to the start, and use my V5 new keepers slip,
And then I get this:
"Taxing a vehicle
Unable to use service
Unfortunately you cannot use this service as the V5C/2 reference number you have used is invalid.
You should have received a V5C vehicle registration certificate (log book) in your name for the vehicle, please use the reference number from this to renew your vehicle tax.
If you have not received the V5C vehicle registration certificate (log book) for the vehicle, in your name, please complete form V62 - application for a vehicle registration certificate and send to DVLA Swansea. Click here to get V62
Start again"
What an absolute joke!
I'm trying to go about things the legal way and they make it nigh on impossible. I wish I didn't bother SORN'ing it now. FML.
