Just been stopped by an officer (1st time in 15 years) for overtaking - no ticket, just a grilling.

So, stuck behind a 45mph lorry and 2 cars on a NSL, I overtook the back one - a police car - Enough room, vision, dashed line.... A mile later i overtook the car and lorry on a long straight, again clear vision.... Next thing, i can see him doing the same and nailing it after me - he slams on the brakes about 2 ft from my bumper... Then the lights

He then reckons i was doing 80, bla bla... Goes on about safety, and finishes with "you cant pass a plod without expecting to wind him up...." WTF - that sounds more like he stopped me just because i didnt sit behind giving "respect"

What is the situation with overtaking - The highway code states "move quickly past the vehicle you are overtaking" - i did exactly that , then coasted back to 60... He said that i should do "60, no more" and was adamant that TED or "time exposed to danger" was immaterial.

Seems so bloody pedantic and unnecessary

thats my question - highway says "move quickly past the vehicle you are overtaking". Its a bit "finger in the air" isnt it??

Re stupid - i dont think so. We were doing 45 on a NSL - he is just pissed off because i did, and 99.9% of people wouldnt.

RoSPA Advanced Drivers Association guidelines are (or used to be) that it is OK to exceed the speed limit during the manoeuver (by no more than 10%) in order to reduce time exposed to danger.

That is what i had been told and asked him - he said no - the limit is 60

He was a panda car, not unmarked. I passed him on the 60 limit. I passed the truck over the limit, probably upto 70, but as people say i was paying attention to the road.

Whether i am stupid overtaking a BiB is peoples opinion - i just want to know if i can pass traffic at a "reasonable" speed (eg +10%) above the limit. That also includes if a scamera was located on the road

No you can't. ROSPA do not set the law. You break the law at your own risk. Don't think that I don't break the limits but not in front of a marked car.

Ok, thanks for the advise. Next time i overtake a panda car(and it wasnt the 1st) i wont go over the limit!

At least i know now that the limit is "The Limit" even though various motoring organsations suggest exceeding the limit safely to ensure a minimum TED.

I was behind a porker cayenne a few months ago, he began an overtake of a lorry... Half way thru he slammed (and i mean slammed!) on the brakes - There was a Scamera van ahead!! If that isnt dangerous i dont know what is....

TBH, his lecture isnt going to change the way i overtake though - Spot the gap, check for space to pull in and nail it
